Course Description

Welcome to this introduction course on German culture and customs. Germany is a diverse and unique country, one that relies heavily on tradition and centuries-old heritage.

During this course, we'll briefly acquaint you to the country, its geography, and offer a brief glimpse into its recent and ancient history. Students will learn important things they should do before traveling to Germany, including obtaining a passport, learning about the electrical systems and money used there, as well as how to deal with the infamous autobahn.

We'll familiarize students with common (and expected) business manners and provide understanding of what Germans expect from business meetings and negotiations. We'll offer students a basic understanding of German attitudes when it comes to business as well as some do's and don'ts for business travelers in Germany.

Germans love to celebrate, and we'll introduce a few important dates and celebrations in German culture (in addition to Oktoberfest) as well as many different types of foods and drinks you'll enjoy during your travels. Students will learn a few tips regarding driving and train travel in Germany, especially beneficial to those moving from location to location.

In this course, we'll also discuss Germany's history leading up to and through the Second World War, the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, and how Germans today deal with perceptions and stigmas of others regarding its past. Such matters are vital to understanding the 21st century Germany.

Finally, we'll introduce students to a number of influential Germans who shaped Germany into the country it is today. Understanding German values, behaviors and morals will help you - whether you're a casual traveler or a businessperson - get the most from your travels in Germany.
