Network performance is an important metric in any company. The number of users logged into a network (often called the network's "traffic") should be carefully monitored. Your traffic might be increasing at a rate that you did not expect. When traffic is high, you should monitor the speed of your network and see how it responds. A "stress test" is often used to test network performance. If you ever need to speak to a vendor about poor performance, you will have your metrics to support any claims you are making.
Tracking calls will also help you identify certain processes that might be automated to improve performance. For example, if your tracking indicates you are receiving many calls from employees on how to perform a specific task in a software package, you might be able to develop an automated way to do the tasks for all of your employees. This automation will reduce the workload for the Help Desk and decrease the rate of future calls.
Finally, your tracking will indicate how your employees are performing their jobs and roles. If speed of resolution is a key indicator of success for your Help Desk, your tracking can help you determine if issues were resolved in a timely manner. This will take just a moment, and the problem is said to be resolved at the point of contact. A white board is a commonly used tool in office settings, because it allows for easy access to information, is portable, and allows for a good deal of flexibility.
