Course Description

This is an introduction to the field of Special Education. It will help anyone to understand more clearly what Special Education is about. The course will provide definitions and insights into the various branches of Special Education. It will help especially parents to know what to look for and how to get help if they suspect that their child may need special educational services. The course will have six lessons which will cover the following topics: Learning Disabilities, Gifted and Talented, Emotional and Social Disorders, ADD/ADHD.
This course is a stand alone course, not a program or a program for certification. It is a supplementary class for those interested in or needed assistance in these areas.
Courses at UniversalClass do award several different certificates, reference letters, and online transcripts. This documentation of your work is ideal for resumes and professional portfolios. Introduction to Special Education has 6 lessons: Lesson 1. What is Special Education? This lesson will provide basic definitions and explanations of the terms Special Education and exceptional child. It will also cover information about types and causes of exceptionality in children. Lesson 2. Assessing for special needs. Though this is not to be taken as a final word on diagnosing the child, this lesson will help you to understand how special needs are assessed. It will provide information on what to look for in a child if you suspect that the child may need special educational services. Lesson 3. Learning Disabilities. This is a wide and varied topic, all of which cannot be covered here. However, this lesson will whet your appetite for learning more about the various types of learning disabilities. Lesson 4. ADD/ADHD. Since this seems to be a common issue with young people, and a controversial one, it is treated in a lesson on its own. This lesson will present some of what the researchers and educators say about ADD/ADHD. Lesson 5. Giftedness ( or Gifted and talented children) This lesson will provide information on the definition and characteristics of giftedness. Lesson 6. Behavior Disorders. This lesson will cover emotional and social problems encountered in children and probable causes. In addition, each of lessons 3 - 6 will include some suggestions for working with children with the special need.

There are no specific requirements for this course, except an interest in learning more and understanding what are special needs in children and how to help them with those needs. There are no required texts. The internet is full of useful information on all aspects of Special Ed. I will provide some websites and specific pages to make the web search easier. The 2 quizzes will be graded on a percentage basis, but the quality of the assignments will count towards the final grade. Students will be awarded a certificate of Academic Excellence for a grade of 70% and over.
