This course will cover the theories of child development with special focus on cognitive, social and emotional aspects of development.Students will be introduced to the stages of development in children from birth to 12 years old. The lessons will cover: - Introduction to human development. - Physical development - Personality and Play. - Cognitive development 1. - Cognitive development 2. - Social development, and Emotional development.  

Upon course completion students will :
-be able to describe the process of development of children from 0-12 yrs old.
- have a knowledge of what is considered normal development and be able to recognize delays or unusual advances in a child's growth.
- be familiar with the major theorists of child development, e.g Freud, Piaget, Erikson.

Course Description

This course will provide a broad overview of the child development theories of experts such as Piaget, Freud, Erikson, etc., with a focus on the physical, social, emotional and cognitive aspects of development. The aim of the course is to help parents, teachers, care-givers to understand the developmental process of childhood and be better able to help the child to develop and learn at an appropriate pace.
This course is a stand alone course, not a program or a program for certification. It is a supplementary class for those interested in or needed assistance in these areas.

Course Lessons

  1. Introduction to Child Development - It is important to understand that development in children is a sequential process and that it should be measured by milestones and achievements and not necessarily by time. The basic principles of human growth and development are presented.
  2. Lesson 2. Physical development - This lesson outlines the process of physical development in the child and some activities to promote physical development.
  3. Lesson 3. Motor Development - This lessons outlines the process and stages of motor development.
  4. Cognitive Development - This lesson describes Piaget's Theory of intellectual development and looks at how parents and teachers can contribute to the intellectual development of children.
  5. Social Development. - This lessons looks at the theories of Erik Erikson and Sigmund Freud and the process of social development.
  6. Emotional Development - Emotional development is harder to observe and measure. This lesson presents some requirements for emotional development and milestones.
  7. Moving into adolescence - The transition from childhood to adolescence is an important phase of development. This lesson gives some information about this transition.
  8. The Whole Child - A summary of the course information and some suggestions for parents/care-givers to help with planning activities for children. Additionally, it is important to understand the factors that affect child development.
