Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work on a busy hospital unit? Health Unit Coordinators (HUCs) work in almost every hospital, nursing home, and extended care facility. They are valuable members of the healthcare team and coordinate the clerical aspects of busy healthcare units. HUCs work in different specialty areas including medical, surgical, intensive care, maternity, psychiatry, rehabilitation -- to name a few. This introductory course is for all adults (and high school seniors) who want to see what goes happens on a busy healthcare unit.

Lesson 1 - Introduction to Health Unit Coordinating

This lesson discusses the history of the health unit coordinating profession, National Association of Health Unit Coordinators (NAHUC) and certification process. Career ladder opportunities for HUCs are also discussed.

Lesson 2 - Health Care Today

This lesson introduces the healthcare system as it exists today including systems, services, managed care, payment sources, and employment in the healthcare fields.

Lesson 3 - The Nursing Department

This lesson introduces the Nursing Department, the department under which most HUCs work.

Lesson 4 - Communication Devices and Their Uses

This lesson discusses he communication devices that the HUC will use on a daily basis.

Lesson 5 - Communication and Interpersonal Skills

This lesson focuses on communication and interpersonal skills that the HUC will have to develop.

Lesson 6 - Workplace Behavior

This lesson concentrates on workplace behaviors that are expected of a HUC.

Lesson 7 - Management Techniques and Problem Solving Skills

This lesson focuses on management techniques and problem solving skills that the HUC will develop.

Lesson 8 - The Patient's Chart

This lesson focuses on the patient's chart. The HUC spends a great deal of time involved with tasks pertaining to maintaining the patient's chart.
