This introductory course is for all adults (and high school seniors) who want to learn what happens on a busy healthcare unit. The Health Unit Coordinator works closely with the medical team which includes nursing staff, physicians, therapists, technicians, and visitors. Although the Health Unit Coordinator is not involved in direct clinical patient care, they are valued members of the health care team and make the difference between a medical unit that works efficiently and one that doesn't. The Health Unit Coordinator works at the nursing station, the hub of any health care unit and the center of activity.
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
1. Describe the role of the health unit coordinator and the duties the HUC performs. 2. Discuss the healthcare system in general and the HUCs place within the system. 3. Describe the members of the healthcare team in the nursing department. 4. Discuss the communication devices that the HUC will be using. 5. Discuss the communication skills that the HUC uses everyday. 6. Describe the work place behavior that is expected of the HUC. 7. Describe the HUCs role in managing the clerical aspects of a health unit. 8. Describe the parts of the patient chart that the HUC will be using.
