This introductory course is for all adults (and high school seniors)  who want to learn what happens on a busy healthcare unit. The Health Unit Coordinator works closely with the medical team which includes nursing staff, physicians, therapists, technicians, and visitors. Although the Health Unit Coordinator is not involved in direct clinical patient care, they are valued members of the health care team and make the difference between a medical unit that works efficiently and one that doesn't. The Health Unit Coordinator works at the nursing station, the hub of any health care unit and the center of activity.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

1. Describe the role of the health unit coordinator and the duties the HUC performs.
2. Discuss the healthcare system in general and the HUCs place within the system.
3. Describe the members of the healthcare team in the nursing department.
4. Discuss the communication devices that the HUC will be using.
5. Discuss the communication skills that the HUC uses everyday.
6. Describe the work place behavior that is expected of the HUC.
7. Describe the HUCs role in managing the clerical aspects of a health unit.
8. Describe the parts of the patient chart that the HUC will be using.

They are valuable members of the healthcare team and coordinate the clerical aspects of busy healthcare units. HUCs work in different specialty areas including medical, surgical, intensive care, maternity, psychiatry, rehabilitation -- to name a few. This introductory course is for all adults (and high school seniors) who want to see what goes happens on a busy healthcare unit.

This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. Course Lessons

  1. Lesson 1 - Introduction to Health Unit Coordinating - This lesson discusses the history of the health unit coordinating profession, National Association of Health Unit Coordinators (NAHUC) and certification process. Career ladder opportunities for HUCs are also discussed.
  2. Lesson 2 - Health Care Today - This lesson introduces the healthcare system as it exists today including systems, services, managed care, payment sources, and employment in the healthcare fields.
  3. Lesson 3 - The Nursing Department - This lesson introduces the Nursing Department, the department under which most HUCs work.
  4. Lesson 4 - Communication Devices and Their Uses - This lesson discusses he communication devices that the HUC will use on a daily basis.
  5. Lesson 5 - Communication and Interpersonal Skills - This lesson focuses on communication and interpersonal skills that the HUC will have to develop.
  6. Lesson 6 - Workplace Behavior - This lesson concentrates on workplace behaviors that are expected of a HUC.
  7. Lesson 7 - Management Techniques and Problem Solving Skills - This lesson focuses on management techniques and problem solving skills that the HUC will develop.
  8. Lesson 8 - The Patient's Chart - This lesson focuses on the patient's chart. The HUC spends a great deal of time involved with tasks pertaining to maintaining the patient's chart.
