It is marked biologically by the onset of puberty and socially by an increasing independence from parents. The lessons cover the aspects of the adolescent development stage- physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. It also examines developmental disorders and ways in which adults should support adolescents. Adolescence has always been described as a difficult stage for the adolescent, parents, teachers and other adults. If you are the parent or teacher of an adolescent you no doubt need help in understanding this developmental stage, in particular the emotional turmoil that is characteristic of teenagers. Even if you are the parent of a young child, it is not too early to learn about adolescence. This is a good time to arm yourself with knowledge and understanding in preparation for the future.

This course will help students to understand the different aspects of adolescent development. It will include the cognitive, social and emotional, and physical changes taking place during this stage of development.

For teachers this course will offer help in planning and executing lessons that capture and sustain teenagers' interest. For parents this will provide valuable information and help you to obtain support so that you know you are not alone in this journey. And for anyone else supporting an adolescent in various circumstances this will guide you to be a better ally.

Dr. Marilyn Robb has added another in her series of child development courses Understanding the Adolescent Stage of Development. This course is for all parents, teachers and other adults who interact with teenagers. The class has 3 main objectives: 1. To examine the different aspects of development in adolescents- cognitive, physical ,social and emotional. 2. To examine these different aspects and how the changes affect adolescents. 3. To explore ways in which this understanding of the difficult stage of adolescent could help adults to better support adolescents.
This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation.
