Course Overview
CNC turning centers are very popular metal-cutting machine tools. Most companies that manufactures any metal products has at least one and is constantly searching for qualified people to run them. To fully master the use of a CNC turning center, a person must become proficient in three distinct skills programming, setup, and completing production runs. This class addresses two of the three skills; setting up a machining center and completing a production run (another class is available for helping you learn CNC turning center programming). Topics include the tasks related to setup and operation, the components of a CNC turning center, how work holding setups are made, how program zero is assigned, and how cutting tools are assembled, measured, & loaded. You ll also learn about the offsets related to cutting tools, including wear and geometry offsets. You ll learn how to cautiously run the first workpiece, getting it to pass inspection. And you ll learn the tasks related to running workpieces in production. Think of this class as like the ground school an aspiring pilot must attend before they can spend time in the cockpit of an airplane. Just as a future pilot must understand the principles of aerodynamics and flight, so must future setup person or CNC operator understand many principles of CNC turning center usage principles that we thoroughly address in this class. Upon the successful completion of this class, you ll understand the concepts related to CNC turning center usage. While you ll still need hands-on experience (which you can only gain by working for a CNC-using company), you ll possess a firm knowledge of what it takes to get started. Graduates of this course will be ready to begin their careers working with CNC turning centers with confidence. Certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation are available when you complete this course to testify to your accomplishment. Include these in your resume to show perspective employers what you know. Special requirement: Note that you need to have two software viewers (Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader) installed on your computer before you can view material presented in the lessons. Both of these viewers are freely distributed and can be downloaded from our website (www.cncci.com). From the navigation buttons on our website, click SERVICES and then click ON-LINE COURSES. The two viewers can be found at the bottom of this page. For more information about this course, including course requirements, course goals, course materials, grading policy, and prerequisites, view the syllabus for this course. A link to the syllabus can be found on the enrollment page under 'Additional Information'.
Course Requirements
In order to successfully complete this class and qualify for a certificate of completion, you must: 1) Check in at least twice a week until you've completed the course 2) Complete all six lessons 3) Pass six tests 4) Complete and pass five assignments Note that you need to have two software viewers (Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader) installed on your computer before you can view material presented in the lessons. Both of these viewers are freely distributed and can be downloaded from our website (www.cncci.com). From our navigation buttons, click SERVICES and then click ON-LINE COURSES. The two viewers can be found at the bottom of this page.
Course Goals
The primary goal of this course is to help you learn enough about CNC turning center setup and operation so that you can secure an entry level position with a CNC-using company.
If you're already working for a CNC using company, the secondary goal is to increase your level of knowledge about CNC turning center usage. If you're currently working as a CNC operator (not setting up machines), this course will show you what it takes to step into a setup person's position.
Course Materials
The only materials needed to complete this course are included with each lesson. Printable materials include lesson text, assignments, and lesson supplements. We recommend that students print everything to retain a permanent future reference of course materials. Printing everything renders a manual that contains over 100 pages. Note that you need to have two software viewers (Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader) installed on your computer before you can view material presented in the lessons. Both of these viewers are freely distributed and can be downloaded from our website (www.cncci.com). From our navigation buttons, click SERVICES and then click ON-LINE COURSES. The two viewers can be found at the bottom of this page.
If interested, students can acquire more CNC-related training materials (CDs, manuals, videos, etc.) directly from our website (www.cncci.com).
Grading Policy
Students will be graded on all tests and assignments. Tests are graded automatically and results are shown immediately (on-line after you take the test). Assignments must be submitted for grading. Grades for assignments will be posted within a reasonable amount of time (usually within a few days). I use a pass/fail approach to grading. A 70% score is required for a passing grade for each test and programming assignment. A passing grade for the entire course will qualify the student for a successful completion certificate and a letter of recommendation. Do note, however, that full comprehension is necessary to become a successful setup person or CNC operator. Employers will not consider you to be a very helpful employee if you're only right 70% of the time!
