Course Description

This course has been designed for people who use computer and Internet related technology at all levels. It introduces and explores general computing and Internet related concepts and terminology with definitions as well as picture and image illustrations. The concepts and terminology are carefully chosen for the average technology user to exclude terms that are too technical.

After taking this course, students will come away with a deeper understanding and better appreciation of the computer and Internet related technologies and become better educated and better versed technology users and consumers.

If you are more interested in understanding how computers work, though, you might want to take my 'Understanding Computers' course. If you are interested in exploring different online communications technology, I encourage you to take my 'Netiquette, Emoticons, and Abbreviations for Online Communications' course, which introduces and explains the proper use of netiquette, emoticons, abbreviations, and concepts and terminology for online communications, such as email, discussion forums, chat, and instant messaging.


In Computer & Internet Terminology Illustrated the only requirement is a computer with Internet access. If you are reading this, you are all set and ready to go. At the conclusion of the course, students will: 1. acquire a general understanding of computer related technologies. 2. have a better appreciation on how the Internet work and 3. become better educated and better versed technology users and consumers.

Professor Yaping Gao has more than 10 years college teaching experience. Her specialization is Curriculum and Instruction with a cognate area in Educational/Instructional Technology. She also teaches Understanding Computers for UniversalClass.


This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation.   2. Lesson 2: Computing Terminology - Part II - This lesson continues to introduce and illustrate general computing related concepts and terminology, including data, types of data, database, desktop, digital/analog, files, file formats, folders/directory, and more.
  3. Lesson 3: Computing Terminology - Part III - This lesson continues to introduce and illustrate general computing related concepts and terminology, including hardware/software, input/output, memory, multitasking, platforms, processing, storage media, and more.
  4. Lesson 4: Internet Terminology - Part I - This lesson introduces and illustrates Internet related concepts and terminology, including access log, address, bookmark, browser, caching, censorware, Common Gateway Interface, cookie, and more.
  5. Lesson 5: Internet Terminology - Part II - This lesson continues to introduce and illustrate Internet related concepts and terminology, including domain, Domain Name System, dot.com, firewall, frames, gopher, home page, HTML, and more.
  6. Lesson 6: Internet Terminology - Part III - This lesson continues to introduce and illustrate Internet related concepts and terminology, including hypertext, HTTP, Internet, Internet2, intranet/extranet, Internet Service Provider, URL, webrings, WWW, and more.
