Course Description

This course presents educational approaches that are effective in establishing high rates of learning, building self-regulation skills, and increasing prospects for self-determination for children and youth with autism spectrum disorders.  Since many of the lessons and assignments are to be completed with children and youth in school settings, students interested in enrolling in this course must have access to the classroom. 

Course Lessons: By the end of the course, the student will demonstrate knowledge and skills related to: A. Basic Concepts of Applied Behavior Analysis Instruction B. Early Speaker Behavior C. Curriculum for Establishing Listener Repertoires D. Behavior Increase and Decreased Principles E. Measurement F. Teachers as Scientific Decision Makers G. Self-Regulation H. Assessment of Self-Regulation I. Monitoring Adaptive Responding J. Teaching Choice-Making and Problems Solving during Self-Regulation K. Self-Determination L. What is Self-Determination? M. Assessing Self-Determination N. Teaching Self-determination Skills O. Opportunities for Self-Determination P. Encouraging Self-Determination in Daily Living.

This course offers 2.2 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation.   3. Unit 2.1: Early Speaker Behavior, Professor Denise Ross - Provides an introduction to the instructional tactics that have proven to be effective in establishing speaker behavior in non-verbal students with autism spectrum disorders.
  4. Unit 2.2: Curriculum for Establishing Listener Repertoires: Professor Jessica Singer-Dudek - Describes curriculum for listener behavior.
  5. Unit 2.3 Behavior Increase and Decrease Principles Used in Applied Behavior Analysis: Professor R. Dougals Greer - Describes the principles that control the increase and decrease of behavior.
  6. Unit 2.4: Measurement: Professor Denise Ross - Describes measurement systems used in ABA.
  7. Unit 2.5: Teachers as Scientific Decision Makers: Professor Dolleen Keohane - Describes how to graph data of student behavior and determine where and when to make decisions to improve outcomes.
  8. Unit 3.0 Self-Regulation: Professor Martin Agran - Explains why it is important for students with autism spectrum disorders to learn to self-regulate.
  9. 3.1: Assessing Self-Regulation - Describes methods of assessing students' use of self-regulation strategies.
  10. 3.2: Monitoring Adaptive Responding - Describes approaches to tracking the effects of self-regulation on students' adaptations to situations involving learning and performance
  11. 3.3: Teaching Choice-Making and Problem-Solving during Self-Regulation - Describes instructional approaches on how to teach choice-making skills and use of cue cards to self-regulate during learning and performance situations.
  12. Unit 4.0 Self-Determination: Professor Michael L. Wehmeyer - Overview of Self-Determination
  13. 4.1: What is Self-Determination? - Provides and overview of self-determination, how it is defined, and how those definitions are useful in education.
  14. 4.2: Assessing Self-Determination - Methods of assessing the self-determination of children and youth with disabilities
  15. 4.3: Teaching Self-Determination Skills - Describes different approaches to teaching students to be self-determined.
