This four-unit course is intended to train teachers, administrators, and parents to master the skills and strategies that will: increase learning, self-determination, and help them be able to adapt materials for students with learning disabilities. The course will identify the symptoms of learning disabilities; examine their underlying causes and their impact on emotional, social and educational development. In addition, educational remediation and other treatment approaches will be examined. Upon completion of this course, a student is expected to demonstrate the following: Knowledge of the psychology of learning disability, its definition and causes. An appreciation for the approaches in educational and employment settings which support individuals with learning disorders; An understanding of the current issues that affect special populations including: The impact that individuals with learning disorders have on their friends and family; and Empathy and respect for individuals with learning disorders regarding their strengths and weaknesses. Course Description

This four-unit course is intended to train teachers, administrators, and parents to master the skills and strategies that will: increase learning, self-determination, and help them to be able to adapt materials for students with learning disabilities.
Course Description To identify the symptoms of learning disabilities; examine their underlying causes and their impact on emotional, social and educational development. In addition, educational remediation and other treatment approaches will be examined.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, a student is expected to demonstrate the following: 1. Knowledge of the psychology of learning disability, its definition and causes. 2. An appreciation for the approaches in educational and employment settings which support individuals with learning disorders; 3. An understanding of the current issues that affect special populations including: 4. The impact that individuals with learning disorders have on their friends and family; and 5. Empathy and respect for individuals with learning disorders regarding their strengths and weaknesses. 6. Strategies to help with inclusion of students with learning disabilities.

Course Requirements: Each student will : 1. Read all lecture presentations and internet information. Readings provided on the internet will supplement, not duplicate course lectures. 2. Complete unit tests. The tests will assess your knowledge of information from lectures and readings. The student is responsible for all lecture and reading information, as any of this material may be included on the test. 3. Online Assignments. In addition to the unit tests, online assignments must be completed.

Instructor Marcy Levy Pryor received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Temple University in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education; a Masters of Science Degree in Instructional Technology from New York Institute of Technology in the area of Instructional Technology and was awarded the Dean's Award for the highest achieving student both academically and professionally. A Masters in Education (Ed.M) in Supervision from Columbia University and a Doctorate in the area of Administration of Special Education from Columbia University. This is her eleventh year teaching and has twice been named "Teacher of the Year."


This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation.   1. Introduction to the Course - Please complete the following: read case study, complete case study survey, participant questionnaire survey, and teacher efficacy survey.
  2. Unit 1: Introduction to Learning Disabilities - Identifies and describes the four characteristics common to most definitions of learning disabilities.
  3. Unit 1.1: Theoretical Perspectives of Learning Disabilities - Identifies and describes the theoretical perspectives of learning disabilities and the pros and cons of the perspectives.
  4. Unit 1.2: Medical Aspects - Identifies the several different medically related issues in the field of learning disabilities.
  5. Unit 1.3: Cognition and Learning Characteristics - Describes the anticipated long- and short-tem memory characteristics of children with learning disabilities; identifies each area of the cognitive-style characteristics of students with learning disabilities.
  6. Unit 1.4: Personality and Social Characteristics - Defines the major characteristics within the domain of personality development; differentiates between social acceptance and social skills.
  7. Unit 1.5: Assessment - Identifies the types of assessment information useful for eligibility decisions and instructional decisions; lists the types of daily work that should be used as informal assessments in child-study team meetings.
  8. Unit 2: Characteristics of Students with Learning Disabilities - This unit intends to prepare general education teachers in understanding the learning characteristics in reading, writing and math of students with learning disabilities.
  9. Unit 2.1: Learning Characteristics in Reading and Language Arts - Discusses the anticipated characteristics of students with learning disabilities in reading, describes various areas of writing skills and delineate the problems that students with learning disabilities have in each area.
  10. Unit 2.2: Learning Characteristics in Math - Describes the possible language and visual-perception-based causes of math deficits; identifies strategies for instruction in math.
  11. Unit 2.3: Students with Learning Disabilities in the Classroom - Illustrates some facts about students with learning disabilities and offers several instructional recommendations for students with learning disabilities.
  12. Unit 3: Inclusive Education - This unit proposes to deliver knowledge on the current developments in inclusion, and will provide guidance and instruction in areas such as: teacher attitudes, preparation and effective instructional practices
  13. Unit 3.1: Current Developments - Reviews the reauthorized IDEA, with special attention to its LRE mandates; review of the central features of effective inclusive education programs.
  14. Unit 3.2: Attitudes - Discusses the research involving general education teachers' and administrators' attitudes towards students with learning disabilities and the type and quality of teacher-student and administrator-teacher interactions.
  15. Unit 3.3: Teacher Preparation - Explores the collaborative partnership between special and general education teachers and stresses its importance to successful inclusive practices. It also explains that adequate teacher preparation is essential to inclusion.
