Medical coder Diana Wilson, CPC, CMC teaches coding the neoplasm not only for advanced coders but also for the less advanced student to help them gain knowledge of coding guidelines as implemented in the coding industry and to build confidence and speed when assigning codes. Students taking this course will: 1. review medical terminology in relation to Neoplasms, 2.demonstrate knowledge of ICD-9-CM coding techniques 3. understand the alphabetic and tabular structures of Volumes 1 and 2 of the ICD-9 book, with emphasis on the Neoplasm Table, 4. be able to look up codes and learn the process of using coding books when coding the neoplasm, 5. identify both primary and principal diagnoses and 6. be able to correctly sequence codes and have thorough understanding and knowledge when coding a neoplasm.
The demand for medical coders is on the rise, as is the pay. Identification of and payment for medical supplies and services depends upon the use of specific coding systems that help identify patient diagnoses, services, and procedures. Assignment of the correct code leads to fewer denials on physician reimbursement by the insurance carrier.
