This course presents insight and develops skills to help people with special needs reach their greatest personal potential. The overall goal is to directly enhance the functional skills and personal independence of people with these disabilities using proven and specialized training. In addition, various general topics related to this population are also presented. Functional skills across seven different domains of learning are presented. Experienced or novice instructors can benefit by learning specific techniques and lesson plans. Parents can benefit as well as the teaching techniques are presented in a straight forward manner. Upon concluding the course the student should acquire insight into various disorders, be able to give an assessment, use established lesson plans, create new person centered lessons and be able to objectively demonstrate where a person with special needs has grown from teaching efforts. All people, regardless of their limitations, can learn. This course presents insight and develops skills to help people with special needs reach their greatest personal potential. The overall goal is to directly enhance the functional skills and personal independence of people with these disabilities using proven and specialized training. Upon concluding the course the student should acquire insight into various disorders, be able to give an assessment, use established lesson plans, create new person centered lessons and be able to objectively demonstrate where a person with special needs has grown from teaching efforts. This course creates a practical skill that is highly accountable and directly usable in teaching people with developmental disabilities.
Dr. William Killion teaches Educating and Understanding the Exceptional Child for parents, teachers and caregivers. The 3 goals for students taking this course are as follows: 1.) To demonstrate insight into various aspects of people with special needs. 2.) To become proficient in administering the Functional Independence Skills Handbook assessment. 3.) To demonstrate skills in making and using creative lesson plans focused to the unique personal needs of the student. The class has over 30 lessons and students will need to purchase The student will need to purchase "The Functional Independence Skills Handbook or F.I.S.H. program."
This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. Course Lessons

  1. Learning Theory - This lesson introduces an overview of learning theory as related to teaching the person with special needs.
  2. Developmental Milestones - A review of seven domains of learning and observable milestones that should occur at 6 months, 1 year, 2 years and three years.
  3. The Brain - A review of the anatomy and function of the human brain as related to learning and people with special needs.
  4. Genetics - Presentation of issues and specific conditions related to the genetics of people who have developmental disabilities.
  5. Diagnostics - An overview of the diagnosis process including performance based, devlopmental and criterion referenced assessments.
  6. Vision - This lesson provides in sight into the anatomy, common physical problems and teaching concepts related to vision and the person with special needs.
  7. Hearing - This lesson provides an overview of auditory anatomy, common problems that sometimes occur and teaching focus related to this sense.
  8. Mental Retardation - Offering insight into the causation, incidence, defintion and teaching strategies related to people who have mental retardation.
  9. Metabolic Disorders - A review of the human metabolic process and disorders that can result from problems with this aspect. Specific focus is given to disorders that cause cause developmental disabilities.
  10. Self Abuse - Offering insight into the problem of self abuse in people with developmental disabilites. Specific ideas are discussed about how to address this issue.
  11. Epilepsy - Understanding the terminology, concepts and issues related to epileptic seizures.
  12. Osteoporosis - A serious problem more common to the developmentally disabled population that the "normal" population. A review of this disorder and how it can be addressed.
  13. Dysphagia - A review of swallowing types of problems and how to address these issues.
  14. Autism - A review of causation, terminology and how to teach people with this problem.
  15. Cerebral Palsy - Learning about types of cerbral palsy and how to teach people with this problem.

This certificate requires a score of 85% or better for each of the 5 exams and the certification exam. In addition submission of the scores from an assessment and seven creative lesson plans are part of the required assignments.
