Do you have an interest in the environment?  Do you want to learn how organisms interact with their environments?  This course is designed for students interested in learning about the basic principles of ecology.  It will cover topics of ecology in four different components:  organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems.

Students will learn how animals and plants utilize Earth's natural resources and compete with each other for survival.  Ecological mathematical models will be described and students will learn how to predict outcomes of various ecological scenarios.  This course will also help the student gain an appreciation for natural environments and the connections between living and non-living things.  Ecology is a science that is rapidly advancing and its contributions will be necessary for the sustainability of our planet in the future.

Enroll today! This is a self-paced, online course. You have 6 months to finish. An instructor will monitor your progress and assess your body of work at course completion. Courses at UniversalClass do award several different certificates, reference letters, and online transcripts. This documentation of your work is ideal for resumes and professional portfolios.

This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. We also offer an expedited Transcript Service for sending your accomplishments to a third party.

Course Lessons

  1. Introduction to Ecology - This lesson is a general introduction to ecology and its four main components. Students will learn a brief history of ecology and the scientific method.
  2. Organismal Ecology Part One - This lesson will discuss the chemical and physical factors that can affect organisms.
  3. Organismal Ecology Part Two - This lesson explains organism adaptations and responses to various abiotic factors in the environment.
  4. Population Ecology Part One - This lesson describes populations, density, dispersal, and habitat selection.
  5. Population Ecology Part Two - This lesson discusses the topic of demography (the statistics that affect population size). Students will learn about life tables, survivorship curves, and how to calculate different variables of demography.
  6. Population Ecology Part Three - This lesson discusses population growth models: the deterministic and stochastic models. Students will also learn about carrying capacity and exponential population growth.
  7. Community Ecology Part One - This lesson describes the basic principles of competition and interactions between populations.
  8. Community Ecology Part Two - This lesson continue the study of community ecology. Students will learn about the different types of niche, animal and plant defenses, and predator-prey relationships.
  9. Community Ecology Part Three - This last lesson in community ecology discusses succession and theories of how the world became so diversified in terms of orgnisms.
  10. Ecosystem Ecology - This last lesson in the course discusses the components of ecosystem and their functions. Students will learn how to calculate the efficiency of ecosystems and how organisms are involved in this most complex component of ecology.
