Course Description

Learn the process of tax preparation and calculating tax returns. Starting at the very beginning, this course takes you through all the steps for understanding the basics of tax terms and tax laws. You will learn the different  filing status for taxpayers and how to put the taxpayer information onto the tax return forms. The newest software is available for this class. The software is easy to use and simplifies tax return preparation. Because of the modern electronic capability, tax preparers don't have to spend hours with pencil and paper figuring math. Calculating forms require minimal input, and  then accurately calculate all the math for you. With these lessons, you can learn to do your own taxes, do your friends and family taxes and become a paid tax preparer during tax season. Optional applications are available at the end of the lessons for registration with the IRS or to become an authorized e-file provider in your state. By the time you have completed the course, you will be able to prepare a basic tax return: taxpayers of each filing status; with a W2 or 1099-R form; with or without dependents; with minor itemized deductions, business or self-employment Schedules. You may also earn a Certificate of Completion from UniversalClass for finishing this class.

Taxation - Learn to Prepare Tax Returns is a class focusing on the study of tax laws, procedures and forms; individual tax, business tax, self-employment tax, pension and retirement tax, tax computations using tax software and e-filing requirements and process. Study guides and shortcuts are available. Students will learn basic tax preparation, from beginning to calculation on tax software and become proficient in calculating individual and business tax returns on a calculating tax return that is ready for mailing or e-filing.

No prerequisite education or experience is required just an interest in taxation, some math aptitude (or calculator). Each lesson will be reviewed; tax forms downloaded. The local libraries usually have blank tax forms also. Blank forms are available via e-mail.

Instructor Enrica Wilder, while working for law firms as an independent contractor or per diem, managed estates and trusts files, computed estate taxes and trust funds. At tax firms and offices of CPA's, she computed taxes for the general public, often with business or investment tax portfolios. She is currently registered with the IRS as a Professional Tax Preparer. This past tax season, she was site coordinator for the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program at a senior citizen's center. Ms.Wilder is a registered E-File provider, both as an individual practitioner and for VITA. She is also registered in EFPTS as batch filer for small businesses.

Course Lessons

  1. Lesson 1 - Introduction to Basic Tax Preparation - The first lesson covers the tax forms and tax tables that are required to complete a basic tax return. The File Sharing section contains the tax files that we will use for this class.
  2. Lesson 2 - Filing Status and Exemptions - The second lesson covers taxpayer filing status and exemptions for the tax return. Several charts in the lesson contain the amounts and following are brief descriptions to simplify choosing a filing status for the taxpayer.
  3. Lesson 3 - Types of Income - Categorizing types of income on a taxpayer's tax return. The tax bracket percentage is a factor in calculating the taxable income.
  4. Lesson 4 - Earned Income Credit and the Child Care Credit - Review of IRS Publication outlining the procedure for taxpayers claiming earned income credit and the child care credit. This credit benefits working single parents earning under $55,000. a year with dependent children in day care.
  5. Lesson 5 - Pension Income Tax Returns - Senior Citizens receiving pensions get a 1099-R tax form from the pension provider. Most have to pay taxes on their pensions. This lesson covers the filing status and tax preparation of taxpayers over 65 who contributed to their retirement pensions.
  6. Lesson 6 - Preparing Tax Returns - Finalizing a tax preparation business with client interview sheet and identifying tax items for forms and schedules.
