This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of a personal computer system that operates in Windows 98, 2000 or XP. You will explore computer hardware devices, software applications and discover methods to search and retrieve documents from the Internet. The course will provide information on the physical components of the computer and the applications that allow you to be productive using a personal computer. The course will also help you to identify various uses for computers in your business and personal life.

Course Lessons

  1. Introduction - Today, computer technology is essential for almost every comfort we enjoy. The power that light and heat our homes, the methods we use to communicate, travel and learn.
  2. Computer Hardware - Hardware refers to the computer's physical components such as input devices, output devices, storage media and communications.
  3. Computer Software - Software is a set of instructions that directs a computer's hardware to accomplish a task. There are two types of computer software, system software and application software.
  4. Windows Operating System - Windows is an operating system program that controls the operation of the computer and the applications you run on the computer system. In Windows, you interact with the computer through the use of graphics.
  5. Help in Windows and Applications - HELP refers to the online manuals included in all Windows environment software. HELP manuals allow you to ask the computer for support when you are attempting to complete a task.
  6. Save and Retrieve Documents - Retain and organize the documents you create by using storage media. Files can be saved on hard disks, floppy disks, CDR or flash drives.
  7. Internet and E-mail - Become familiar with the Internet and E-mail. Learning a few basic things about accessing the Web will make your search for information easier and faster.
  8. Application Software - Application software that runs in Windows has common characteristics. This lesson will identify some of these characteristics so you can use them effectively.
