Course Description

Defensive Teaching THEY DON'T TEACH THIS COURSE IN COLLEGE You've heard of defensive driving? Well this course is called Defensive Teaching.  College courses, supervisors, administrators, and books all tell us what to do in the 'ideal' class situation.  Well this may sound radical but very few teachers have an 'ideal' class situation.  If you do, this course is not for you.

It's a new day. I have been teaching since 1972 and have never seen anything like this. To quote a fellow teacher "We old timers feel like a square peg in a round hole". I am just a few years from retirement and wish to share some survival techniques with you. I will relate actual incidents, show how I defended myself, then analyze what I should have done.  Defensive Teaching is a progressive technique.  As you work through the course, you will notice my progression.  I will also focus on techniques other teachers have used - that work! Once you finish this course, you can pull ideas and techniques from it that will fit your personality and beliefs. NO one will agree with everything discussed. But it won't hurt to try it. Something you learn in this course will work for you.  If not, consider another profession (smile).

Course Lessons

Lesson 1: Wake Up To Your Situation....Wake Up To Your Rights

When will you receive your wake up call? When will you realize that "teaching ain't easy". Hopefully never. But just in case you do - this first lesson will tell you about the wake up calls of myself and others - and more important - how to deal with it.

Lesson 2: Pick Your Battles

This term has become a mantra among many teachers of urban students. Some things you will just have to let go. You will not be able to stop every little bit of crap in the classroom. Here are methods I use to Pick My Battles.

Lesson 3: Watch Your Back, Watch Your Coffee, and Watch Your Wallet

Sometimes our job gets dangerous. This lesson explains why it is always important to be on guard. For instance, learn why you should never turn your back on the class.

Lesson 4: Go from One Extreme to Another - No Middle

This lesson will help you decide your personality. You have two choices - remain anonymous or be their "momma". Find out why there can be NO in between.

Lesson 5: Document Document Document

The best defense is a good offense - or is it vice versa. It is imperative that you keep accurate and dated records of consistent negative behavior. It helps.

Lesson 6: Fight Fight

Physical fighting among students is the major attraction/excitement of the day. Learn how to protect yourself and what your first responsibility is when a fight breaks out.

Lesson 7: Is It Worth It?

This lesson assists you in assessing your situation. I will guide you through weighing your options, benefits, and help you decide "is it worth it?".

Lesson 8: IT IS NOT YOU

This final lesson explains how not to blame yourself when things go wrong and what to do to correct them.
