Hypnosis: Simply described, hypnosis involves the practice of methodically slowing down and relaxing the body's systems until the mind reaches a state of relaxation, or light trance, which allows it to readily accept beneficial suggestions. Traditionally, moving into a hypnotic state involved watching an object that moves rhythmically over and over, such as a pendulum or a candle flame. However, nowadays the most common and effective way of inducing a hypnotic state is through a systematic process of relaxation followed by spoken "hypnotic" suggestions.

In the case of very serious problems, it is important to either see a medical or psychiatric doctor, or to engage a professional hypnotherapist.

Hypnosis is rapidly gaining acceptance in the medical field for many conditions that may impair one's ability to live fully and happily. An amazing number of conditions are being treated with hypnosis, in addition to the medical uses in pain therapy, many of the emotionally-based.


We have all heard of stage hypnotists who make their subjects behave like chickens. There are hypnotists who claim to be able to hypnotize an entire group, as well as those famous Svengalis who have abused their ability to influence peoples' minds. But hypnosis is not the same as losing consciousness, and is not dangerous.


The truth is, we will not transgress our basic values

based on suggestions made under a hypnotic trance


For example, if you are an ethical person, even the strongest hypnotist will not be able to convince you to perform a criminal act. Qualified hypnotherapists are licensed and competent in the art of helping their clients create only positive change.


The power of hypnosis lies in creating a receptive state of mind that accepts new ideas, and that has the ability to reprogram our thinking, and thus, help in changing our behaviors and viewpoints. The best hypnotherapists will consult with a client for whatever time it takes to help him determine the perfect language of each hypnotic suggestion, so that there are no additional ideas, motives or agendas introduced into the session.


The idea of having someone else in control of our brain's programming can be intimidating, and has put many people off from the idea of hypnotherapy. But, therapists have realized that, although they may be the ones speaking the hypnotic suggestions, the client under hypnosis is the one who is making the decisions and accepting the suggestions. Therefore, it naturally follows that being personally in control of the suggestions introduced under hypnosis might create even more dramatic results. In fact, psychologists agree that the results of self-hypnosis are just as effective, and may be the more ideal solution for changing our habits, our thinking and thus, our life experiences.

Self-hypnosis allows us the opportunity to really understand the truth of this statement, and get down to the core of what holds us back in life, what hurts us and what heals us. For practical purposes, self-hypnosis is easier, as well. There is no need to set appointments or pay a professional, when you have all the knowledge needed to help yourself. Further, it is very satisfying and empowering to create the changes in your own life, and watch the results of your practice take form.

In the study of self-hypnosis, we learn, basically, three steps: a) determining exactly what issues we want to address in self-hypnosis; b) learning the steps to reaching a deep state of relaxation and c) learning to craft the appropriate "scripts" for our sessions. It can be challenging to create the perfect hypnotic suggestions that will strike at the core of what we are trying to accomplish. Of course there is much more to learn than just these three steps, but they form the foundation for the process of self-hypnosis.

In the same way that we learn to ride a bicycle, drive a car and type words - all actions that we perform without having to think through each step of the process -- our brain has the ability to learn new skills, and to change its previous programming, through self-hypnosis.

The most suggestible state of consciousness, as mentioned earlier, is the alpha state. We reach the alpha state often during the course of a day. Watching television or movies is one way that people drop into the alpha state. Sometimes when we are simply daydreaming we are in an alpha state. A fascinating notion is that we are often in an alpha state when we are eating.
