<title>World War I </title><description>Unlike anything that had gone before it, the first great conflagration of the twentieth century was to set a precedent for all wars to follow. Involving nations from around the globe, the world had never seen a military conflict on this scale. This brutal struggle is known by many names: 'the Great War', 'The War to End All Wars', 'the First World War', and 'World War I'. Beginning in 1914 and lasting until 1918, this event would change the face of the world forever. Fought primarily in Europe, World War I claimed the lives of over nine million people and was one of the most deadly military conflicts in history. Much more than just an isolated incident in the history of humankind, the developing political climate in Europe had been brewing for a very long period of time. Alliances were formed, wars were fought over disputed territories, and bitter rivalries were established. What resulted was an epic-scale struggle for the domination of a continent and, perhaps, the world itself. For the first time in the history of warfare, aerial combat was used extensively. The trench-style warfare, complete with artillery fire, barbed wire, and chemical weapons, was unlike any conflict ever seen before. The aftermath of this brutal war would resolve little and, ultimately, pave the way for establishment of Nazi Germany and the next World War. In this course, the major issues and causes of the First World War will be discussed, along with a summary of the major battles, powers, and personalities (both military and political) that shaped the events and ultimate outcome of this epic struggle. This information should give the student a working understanding of the basic history of the war and how it helped set the stage for the next tragic global conflict. </description>

<title>Introduction to Music Appreciation </title><description> Music shapes and is shaped by our lives. Learn and appreciate the history of music. A well-rounded study of music appreciation begins with basic elements of music. Knowing the basic elements of music will aid any music listener in developing a working vocabulary for discussing music, determining different qualities of music, and evaluating a composer or performer's choices with a composition. These elements can then be applied when presented with a new piece or even genre of music. Jazz, for example, is a genre of music started in the United States within the African-American culture, using syncopated rhythms of African music, call-and-response forms used in slave songs and spirituals, and European musical influences. This unique blend of music origins still accounts for new developments and experiments in jazz music today. We will also study how Classical music has changed since the days of Beethoven and Brahms. The twentieth century contained a rich tradition of new styles and brilliant new composers from Europe and the United States . Visionaries such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel set the stage for the early twentieth century with new ideas, and Arnold Schoenberg ushered in the Modern era in 1945 with his revolutionary sound. Finally, we will review the myriad contributions to the musical repertoire from non-Western regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, India , and Japan . Both European and American music have been greatly influenced by these regions and the history of these musical styles are both diverse and enlightening. Students in this course will have the opportunity to sample many kinds of music, from the Gregorian Chants of the Middle Ages to the song that currently occupies the #1 spot on Billboard' s Hot 100 Chart. Everything that had made the First World War such a monumental event was soon eclipsed by the colossal scale and impact of the next. World War II involved more nations and soldiers than any major war before or since. The technology was grander and more deadly. The villains were easily identifiable, worthy adversaries bent on global domination. The resistance to the Axis Powers; comprised of Germany, Japan, and Italy; was pushed to their limit in terms of providing soldiers and war materiel. The epic battles of World War II on land, through the air, and at sea were waged with ferocity unlike any other war--on two fronts. The political and economic fallout from the First World War and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles did not bring about the lasting peace that was hoped. Rather, the outcome of World War I left the German nation a major power in Europe--and bitter over their defeat. The worldwide effects of the Great Depression had a major impact on the United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany, but the effects were most notably felt in Germany. This discontent led to the rise of Adolf Hitler, his Nazi Party, and the creation of the Axis. Determined to re-establish Germany as the true superpower in Europe, the Germany military sprung into action, conquering large amounts of Western Europe before many of the neighboring countries could realize what had happened. At the same time, Italy invaded North Africa and Japan began to expand its influence by conquering many islands in the Pacific. The effects of World War II cannot be underestimated, as they still impact lives and nations to this very day. The political re-structuring that occurred following the defeat of the Axis Powers left the world a very different place: the creation and use of nuclear arms, the establishment of the nation-state of Israel, the division of much of Eastern Europe, the rapid expansion of Communism throughout much of Asia and Europe, the division of Germany, America's rise to superpower status, and far more. Clearly, the impact of this greatest of wars cannot be emphasized enough. </description>

In this view, catastrophes and other monumental events happen as a result of natural forces. In the conspiratorial view, a small group of people exert their power to directly affect an outcome that will increase their power or benefit themselves in other ways. </description>

<title>Metaphysics 101 </title><description>When the word ' metaphysics ' is mentioned, a wide variety of possible meanings springs to mind. For some, it is often considered part of the science of physics; to others, it might mean something mystical; to others still, it might represent a branch of philosophy or merely an incomprehensible mass of theoretical musings that could only be understood by professors with patches on their elbows living in an ivory tower somewhere. While all of these notions may have some merit to them, they only touch upon the true scope and purpose of the field of metaphysics. Since the beginning of philosophy--indeed, perhaps since the beginning of man's quest to learn about himself and the universe that surrounds him--there has been the discipline of metaphysics. While it may not have always been called such, it is nevertheless an important aspect of being human that everyone has dabbled with to one degree or another. Metaphysics, while sounding very complex or obtuse, is really nothing more than thinking about what exists and what the ultimate reality of the universe is (Geirsson and Losonsky, 1998). Questions within the field of metaphysics involve many of the 'big' issues in life: Is there an absolute right and wrong? Does God (or a creator) exist? What is the universe made of? Does free will exist or are we traveling on a predetermined path? All of these concepts and more, as well as their implications for human thought and life, are part and parcel of the philosophical discipline of metaphysics. While most people may not think in terms of 'doing metaphysical thought'--at least not in the strict philosophical sense--the fact remains that all thinking human beings have some sort of metaphysics that guide their lives everyday--a 'worldview' in essence. This course will look at what metaphysics is; what the key concepts and terms within the topic are; the practical ramifications of metaphysics; and very briefly discuss the history, development, and major schools of thought from the ancient Greeks to modern times. Modern 'New Age' metaphysics will also be discussed. By the conclusion of the course, it is hoped that the student will have a better understanding of metaphysics and perhaps a increased desire to study further. </description>

The primary aim of our involvement in Vietnam was to contain the spread of communism in Southeast Asia following the events of the Korean War and the Chinese Civil War of 1949. The United States officially backed the anti-communist Republic of South Vietnam (South Vietnam) against the forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), also called the 'Vietcong'. The North Vietnamese received military and economic assistance from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the People's Republic of China (Communist China), which greatly prolonged the conflict and created a significantly more difficult obstacle for the U.S. Armed Forces to surmount. What followed was one of the most brutal and unique wars ever fought by America. This course will examine the history of the Vietnam War. Christ's mission on earth was to clear up misconceptions and errors in the Old Testament, to educate followers about God's true will, to provide a human example of goodness to emulate and to die for the sins of mankind so that all people could experience atonement, (reconciliation with God), and be redeemed for personal sins. This course does not focus on, or favor, any specific Christian church. What is provided, however, for reference and educational purposes, are the basic principles and doctrines of the world's largest Christian churches and denominations, namely Roman Catholic*, Eastern Orthodox* and Protestant. <title>The Runes </title><description>Some say the Runes are a mystic source of power and protection bestrode from the Ancient Gods. Others have sought and believably found spiritual harmony and co-existence with the natural earth . For many, asking for daily guidance by casting of the runes onto an outstretched cloth is a sacred act. To have ones destiny lay out before them, as prescribed by the gods is divine indeed. To understand how to cast and draw upon the mystical power, one must seek to explore its natural origins. Thought by most, the roots lie deeply with in ancient Norse Viking mythology and history. During a period known as The Dark Ages 600-800 BC , in the region of Scandinavia lived a society of people that had no need of a written language. They expressed ideas using a system of mantra sounds that corresponded to each of 24 symbols Elder Futhorkh Runes that formed complete thought based on their arrangement to each other. As the Vikings traveled and explored the neighboring regions, they encountered new and different tribes. Each, as they adopted the Futhorkh Runes into their own culture attached the symbols to their own alphabets and added new symbols for the alphabet that had none.
