Have you ever wanted to learn more about Desktop Publishing using Word?  Have you ever wanted to create a newsletter from a document that is already typed?  If your answer is "yes" then this is the course for you.  Desktop Publishing with Word for Beginners will introduce you to such Word features as:

This course is primarily for Word 2002 (XP), but can be adapted to Word 2003.  The instructor is knowledgeable in both versions of Word and can provide instruction to complete the class using Word 2003 or Word XP (2002).

This course assumes that you know basic Windows and Word.  You should have general computer knowledge.

Desktop Publishing with Word - Beginners . Upon completion of this course you will see how easy it is to change a basic document into a professional-looking newsletter. By acquiring these skills, you may be able to earn income creating newsletters and other documents for businesses, schools, and other organizations.

Course requirements: Must have full version of Word 2002, Word 2000 or Word 97. Must have basic knowledge of Word (any version) and Windows (any version). Must have some keyboarding skills. Must complete all lessons, tests, assignments and final project.

Instructor Audrey Lawrence is an adjunct faculty at a community college. Director of Education at technical career school. She has worked in the computer field since 1974 as a computer programmer/analyst, computer specialist and software tester. She is also a computer consultant, working primarily with small businesses.


This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. Course Lessons

  1. Introduction to Desktop Publishing - The lesson will introduce the student to the course and describe the features needed to change a plain-text document to a professional-looking newsletter.
  2. Open Document and add Paragraph Formatting - This lesson will demonstrate how to double space and add full justification to paragraph.
  3. Add Columns - The student will open course document and add newspaper columns with a vertical line between column.
  4. Format Header Line and Paragraph Title Lines - This lesson will demonstrate how to format the Header line and paragraph title lines.
  5. Add Paragraph Borders - This lesson will demonstrate how to add a horizontal line under the Header Line by using the paragraph border options. The lesson will also show how paragraph borders can be used to enhance subtitle in a newsletter.
  6. Add Footer and Set Tab - This lesson will demonstrate how to add a footer to document. The same steps can be used to add header. The footer appears at bottom of document and header at the top.
  7. Insert and Format Graphic - This lesson demonstrates how to insert a picture. Pictures may be inserted from Word or from the Internet. This lesson will also provide basic instructions on sizing picture, placing borders around it, and changing the text flow.
  8. Add Page Border - This lesson demonstrates how to add a page border to document. You will select a line style page border, however, other borders are available.
  9. Finished Document for Course and Final Project - This lesson will give you an opportunity to use several of the features and apply them to initial document and then complete a final project.
