Course Description

This course provides active practice in a special education setting. During the course of this practice, the student will become more progressively adept in the development and implementation of effective strategies for children with autism spectrum disorders or intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Each student will be required to serve at least 300 hours working with children who have disabilities at a site. In addition, there will be lectures, readings, assignments, and a research project required by the course. Since the instructor will not be able to make visits to the classrooms to complete evaluations, it is up to the student to: 1) locate a school and 2) find a certified teacher, supervisor, or principal who will agree to host the student and act as "supervisor" during the course of the 300 hour practicum experience. The person must also agree to complete progress reports and formal observations.  The 300 hours may be completed in public or private schools settings, institutions, and/or hospitals that provide educational services for individuals with disabilities. However, the student must be able to work 1:1 with at least one student with autism spectrum disorder or intellectual/developmental disability.

This practicum is intended to be completed over the course of 2-3 months.  As such, many of the assignments are due according to the number of clinical hours completed.

Course Goals: By the end of the course, the student will demonstrate knowledge and skills in these specific instructional areas: A. assessment and educational programming B. teaching tactics, behavioral strategies and supports C. curriculum examination and adaptation D. research

This course offers 3.8 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. We also offer an expedited Transcript Service for sending your accomplishments to a third party.
