This is a course that will help parents and educators understand the effects of violence and its impact on children. During the past 25 years, violent crime among juveniles has more than quadrupled, and weapons offenses for children ages 10-17 have doubled. What has happened? We must try to understand why violent and horrific events are occurring with alarming frequency. Who is to blame? Schools? Parents? Media? And more importantly, what can be done to prevent this escalation? This class will provide alarming but basic facts and statistics about violence and children; provide discussions regarding the news report, possible causes of violence and early identification of potential for violence; how to help children avoid violent conflicts, and finally solutions, ideas and resources to help prevent violence in homes, schools and communities.
