This introductory course examines the important principles of an insurance contract.Legal principles such as insurable interest, premiums, compensation and claims payment and the principles of good faith like misrepresentation, disclosure and consumers rights' against manufacturers of goods are examined in an in-depth manner, devoid of legal technicalities.

Issues discussed in these topics are:What is an insurance contract?Who can be parties to it?What are the rights and obligations of these parties?What is the extent of their liabilities?What is the significance of agency in insurance contracts?What are the duties an agent owes his master ( the Principal)?How broad and or limited are these duties?Who can sue or be sued in insurance contract?How does the court make assessment of claims - what are the guiding principles?Do consumers have rights against manufacturers of items they consume - how can these rights be enforced? What are the contrainsts?

Answers to these questions are discussed in a very lucid manner so that the learner gradually comes to a basic understanding of how insurance works in our everyday life.

Lesson 2: Agency in Insurance Contracts

The agency relationship is examined in this lesson.The overlap between the roles of general and special agents are given a critical look.It also focusses on the fudiciary nature that exist between these agents and their principals.

Lesson 3: Suing In Insurance Contracts

Who can sue or be sued in insurance contracts is often not a simplistic issue because of the nature of insurance contracts, this lesson explains why and throws more light on this issue.

Lesson 4: Legal Issues in Claims Payment and Compensation

This lesson examines the type of insurance contracts where a third party who is neither the insured nor the insurer can claim benefits.It looks further at the factors that courts often take into consideration in awarding claims to injured parties.

Lesson 5: Consumers and their Rights Against Producers of Goods

Instances when manufacturers of goods may and may not be liable to consumers are examined in this course.As usual, it is supplemented with real life legal cases to aid understanding.

Lesson 6: Analysis of Cases and Current Insurance News

The objective of this lesson is to get students acquainted with legal principles and reasoning. The lesson therefore relates current cases and news to insurance principles.They are further discussed in the forums.
