This course presents the benefits of running and compares running with fitness walking. It covers everything from choosing running shoes, running techniques for beginners and advanced runners, tips and drills for running farther and faster, introduction to racing and nutrition and injury prevention. At the completion of the course, beginners should be able to run a mile without stopping and participants who are already running will get tips on how to improve. Those who prefer will be able to apply the information to fitness walking or racewalking instead of, or in addition to running. Course Description

So you want to be a runner! Running can improve your health, mood, appearance, and self-esteem. In this class, you will learn about proper running technique, choosing gear, racing, and more. Instructions are given to help the absolute beginner get started. Running safety is discussed. 'Run longer and faster' guides the advanced beginner or intermediate runner to improvement. Nutrition considerations and injury prevention are also covered. You can ask the instructor questions about your own running program through email. Get started in this great sport! Much of this information is also useful to fitness walkers. Instructor Joann Bally is a certified personal trainer, and has been a slow, but happy runner for 25 years.
Running Basics is a class presenting the benefits of running and compares running with fitness walking. It covers everything from choosing running shoes, running techniques for beginners and advanced runners, tips and drills for running farther and faster, introduction to racing and nutrition and injury prevention. At the completion of the course, beginners should be able to run a mile without stopping and participants who are already running will get tips on how to improve. Instructor Joann Bally has over 12 years experience as a personal trainer. She has completed a fitness instructor course, UCLA extension, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, National Strength & Conditioning Assn. and a Health/Fitness Instructor certified by American College of Sports Medicine.


This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation.   3. Running Technique - This lesson shows you how to get started running if you are a beginner, presents important running technique tips, and introduces nutrition for runners.
  4. Run Faster and Farther - Learn to run faster and farther, while avoiding injury.
  5. Racing and Running Strategies - This lesson gives you some tips and encouragement if you decide to participate in a community race, marathon, or just competitive fun.
  6. Running Terms and Definitions - This lesson provides valuable reference information and tips and may be updated as the course progresses. Read it through. Although there are no quizzes or assignments attached,there is new information and expanded explanations.
