Course Description


This comprehensive course provides an up-to-date presentation of the essentials of sociological study. Students will learn a wide range of classical and contemporary perspectives which will encourage links between theories and current research. With the addition of numerous net links, thoughtful exercises and examples, and review quizzes--this course will help students develop a sociological imagination.  This is an ideal environment in which to examine ourselves, study our own society, as well as study our neighbors.  

 

Topics covered will examine the sociological perspectives, sociological research, cultural debates, the process of socialization, groups and organizations, crime and deviance, stratification, inequality and discrimination that effects ageism and gender, race and ethnicity, issues involving the economy, different forms of government, marriage, religion, health and environment safety, urbanization, and social movements. This course is an excellent resource for any age student pursuing aspects of this study or the non-academic hobbyists and life-long learners.

  5. Lesson 5: Socialization and the Life Cycle - Topics will focus on the environment, genetics, and social exeriences in socialization.
  6. Lesson 6: Social Interaction - Topics will focus on the day-to-day contact with other individuals including physical, verbal, and observation interactions.
  7. Lesson 7: Groups and Organizations - Topics will focus on the elements in interaction amoung individuals with similar characteristics.
  8. Lesson 8: Governments, Political Power, and War - Topics will focus on the importance of politics in societies.
  9. Lesson 9: Urbanization and Population - Topics will focus on the affects of environment on lifestyles and development.
  10. Lesson 10: Deviance, Crime, and Social Conformity - Topics will focus on societies "norm" in acceptable behavior.
  11. Lesson 11: Stratification, Class, and Inequality - Topics will focus on how disparities in wealth and education, divide individuals into social classes.
  12. Lesson 12: Gender and Age Inequality: Sexism and Ageism - Topics will focus on the affect of gender and age in determining social and cultural roles and opportunities.
  13. Lesson 13: Race and Ethnic Inequality - Topics will focus on discriminatory behavior against racial and ethnic groups.
  14. Lesson 14: Marriage and the Family - Topics will include the changing definition of marriage and the Healthy Marriage Initiative.
  15. Lesson 15: Work and Economic Life - Topics will explore economic life during the industrial age, during the information age, and economic growth seeks globalization.
