Short stories are a great way to begin prose writing and this course will show you how to get started.  The class is intended for beginning writers who would like to either learn how to write stories or improve their writing abilities.  If you are interested in creative writing and have at least a high-school reading and writing level, this class will inspire you.  It allows for individualization so that you can focus on the elements important to your writing, and so that you can receive personalized reading recommendations and writing critiques. 
 
You will learn how to write original short stories and feel comfortable moving from an initial idea and prewriting to plotting and writing and editing/rewriting.

Course Description

Have you ever read a story and thought that you could have written it better?  Have you ever had a brilliant idea for a story, but not known how to actually write it?  Have you ever had children beg you for one more story before they go to sleep?  If so, then you are interested in short stories.
 
Short stories are a great way to begin prose writing.  This course teaches you how to write them.  Lessons focus on practical instruction, including how to come up with ideas, how to begin writing, and how to form a story.  Attention is also paid to developing your work and possibly publishing it.
 
This course is intended for beginning writers who would like to either learn how to write stories or improve their writing abilities.  If you are interested in creative writing and have at least a high-school reading and writing level, then you will benefit from this course.  It allows for individualization so that you can focus on the elements important to your writing, and so that you can receive personalized reading recommendations and writing critiques. 
This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. We also offer an expedited Transcript Service for sending your accomplishments to a third party.

Course Lessons

  1. Creativity, or Getting Started - How does one jump the hurdle from staring at a blank page to writing a story? This lesson covers how to begin writing, creativity techniques, and turning your brilliant ideas into stories.
  2. Reading, Writing, & Genre - One of the key skills you should learn is to read like a writer. Learn from everything you read.
  3. Construction Zone: How To Build a Story - In the first two lessons we discussed how to get ideas and begin writing. In this lesson we will look at how to construct an actual short story.
  4. Finishing Touches - This lesson will discuss how to finish your story. It is crucial that the audience is satisfied by your ending.
  5. After the Ending: What now? - Once you have written your story, you still have more to do. Here we will discuss some of the things you can do with your story after finishing it.
