Course Description

Coordinating media briefings is an art - and a lot of work!  There is so much behind the scenes that the public does not see, so much more than a guy standing behind a few microphones with reporters shouting questions at him.  There is work and planning involved to pull these events off with relatively few issues.

Course Lessons

  1. Welcome! - Welcome to students.
  2. Planning a Briefing - A press briefing is a way for an organization, individual or agency to communicate information to the media so that, in turn, if necessary, the media can communicate that message to the public.
  3. The Media Advisory - The media advisory alerts the media to upcoming events such as briefings, B-roll feeds, etc. This allows them to prepare. They can decide whether it is to have someone at the briefing, if they plan to downlink to the satellite or fiber optic feed.
  4. Briefing Set-Up - The briefing set-up prepares the briefing area for media activity as well as makes it convenient and comfortable for the speakers. It also sets up the area to offer additional information to the media.
  5. Briefing Participants - Once the participants begin arriving, the flurry of activity can intensify exponentially. Keep all your information on a clipboard with the participant sign in sheet on top and your checklist just below it. Be prepared to move quickly and adapt to change.
  6. Final Thoughts - These are some final tips for speaking and organizing a briefing. Just thought they might come in handy.
