Today, human rights have acquired international awareness and consciousness, so much so that there are now international laws and international organizations that have been specifically developed to safeguard them. Human rights, in fact, dates back to the year 1215 and had had a profound influence on world events like the American War of Independence, the French Revolution and the English Bill of Rights. What exactly are these rights and how is it that there are now international laws protecting them? How does all these operate? What are international and non - governmental organizations? How important are their roles in promoting and protecting human rights worldwide? To what extent has terrorism changed the face of human rights? Can Heads of State, Presidents or Prime Ministers be charged to court for gross violations of human rights or are there legal mechanisms meant to shield them from " public embarrassment"? What are these mechanisms and to what extent does it protect them? Analyzing real life cases from Slobodan Milosevic of Yugoslavia, Senator Pinochet of Chile, and Charles Taylor of Sierra Leone, this course examines the relevance of international tribunals and how is it that these personalities have not found it easy to run from the law for their gross violation of human rights while they were in office.

Course Description

One of the most profound effects of Marshall McLuhans' description of the world as a "global village" was its effects on human rights' activities. Today, with technology, most international human rights organizations have branches and affiliates all over the world and can therefore easily monitor human rights' violations.

The world as presently constituted, therefore, provides an opportunity to get educated about one's basic rights and the events that shape history in different parts of the world.

This course provides a general overview of international human rights and a thorough knowledge of fundamental human rights. It also discusses the role of international pressure groups and international courts and tribunals in observing and enforcing human rights.

Lesson One and Two traces the philosophical background and types of human rights. Lesson Three focuses on "the engine" on which human rights operate - The Rule of Law, while Lesson Four examines how international human rights organizations mould public opinion and ensure observance of international human rights covenants. The course ends with the analysis of high profile cases of Senator Pinochet of Chile, Slobodan Milosevic of former Yugoslavia and Charles Taylor of Liberia - all former Heads of State.

This course is meant for undergraduates and graduate students taking human rights courses and anyone seeking a career or an update on human rights. It will aid them in understanding the dialectics involved in human rights practice in the world, in addition to equipping them with current information on human rights' activities.
