Do you enjoy paintings by the French Impressionists, but would like to understand them better? In this eight-week course you'll learn about the culture, style, painters, and major works of the Impressionist movement. Explore the lives and paintings of Manet, Sisley, Pissaro, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cassatt, and Morisot. Visit the websites of museums around the world, observe Impressionist works, and write your responses to them. Let this class expand your knowledge and appreciation of this beloved art style.
This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. Course Lessons

  1. Setting the Scene - In lesson 1 you'll study the cultural background that influenced the Impressionists and explore the controversial works of Edouard Manet.
  2. The Artists of the Batignolles - In lesson 2 you'll learn more about the Impressionists as a loosely assembled group, and explore the art of Berthe Morisot.
  3. Personalities and Family Histories - In lesson 3 you'll read about the personalities and histories of Impressionist artists. Then you'll explore works by the artist Alfred Sisley.
  4. Towards Impressionism - In lesson 4 you'll read more about the development of Impressionism and the colorful works of artist and mentor Camille Pissarro.
  5. The Exhibitions and Their Critical Reception - In lesson 5 you can read about responses to the Impressionist exhibitions and enjoy the beloved works of Claude Monet.
  6. The Impressionist Subject - In lesson 6 you can read about the varied subjects chosen by Impressionists and explore the works of the prolific painter Edgar Degas.
  7. Questions of Style - In lesson 7 consider the Impressionists' painting styles and explore the thoughtful works of the artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
  8. The Impressionists and the Art Market - In lesson 8 read about the art market in the 19th Century and today. Then explore the beautiful paintings of American Mary Cassatt.
