Nicole Richie becomes skeletal before our prying eyes. Mary-Kate Olson becomes an icon. Elite gymnasts die, shrivelled to 50 pounds. There is an eating disorder epidemic, and much of it is underground, hidden from view except for the most obvious signs (extreme weight loss, ruptured esophagus, etc.). Why is anorexia gaining momentum among young women and men, even girls as young as 9 years of age? What are the consequences? What are the trends? This course explores the background and history of anorexia, statistics, demographics, and focuses on the impact of the media, and websites, both pro-anorexia (pro-ana) and those devoted to recovery.

Course Description

How and why does one become anorexic?  While many blame the media, anorexia is really about psychology and social control. Eating disorders are epidemic in our society.  This course explains why it is likely to get worse before it gets better.

This course investigates the nature, causes, and manifestations of anorexia, and explores causes, behaviors, health and psychological consequences. Taking this course will provide you with statistics, current articles, case studies, and information needed to understand what has become an epidemic in our time.  You will read stories by and about anorexics, examine the impact of the media and pro-anorexia websites, explore psychological issues, and find out which recovery approaches work and why.

With a focus on writing and interaction with other students, the course allows students to see how writing memoirs, autobiography, and creative non-fiction can help an individual gain insight into anorexia and other eating disorders.

If you or someone you know has battled an eating disorder, you will find this course to be absolutely fascinating. It provides vital information for counselors, college students, coaches, people interested in dance, historians, fashion designers and media specialists.

Course Lessons

Tell a Friend

Lesson 1: Unit 1: Anorexia -- A Deadly Quest

Almost everyone has known a friend, family member, or acquaintance who has suffered from anorexia nervosa. It is easy to feel helpless. However, an understanding can lead to a positive approach.

Lesson 2: Unit 2: Anorexia from Medieval Time Until Now

Beginning with medieval mystics and saints, including Catherine of Siena, and Theresa of Avila, and then examining the Victorian "fasting girls," this unit examines how fasting became equated with feminine purity.

Lesson 3: Unit 3: How and Why Do People Develop Anorexia?

Some argue that anorexia is due to the influence of the media and the pressure to conform to societal ideas of beauty. Others say that anorexia is genetic, while still others make connections between anorexia and depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Lesson 4: Unit 4: Examples and Case Studies

Why do some of the best, brightest, and most talented women lose their lives to anorexia? It is a tragic reality, and this chapter takes a close look at Karen Carpenter, elite gymnast Christy Henrich, and honor student Elyssa McCall, as well as others.

Lesson 5: Unit 5: The Future of Anorexia: Cultural Trends, Proana Sites, Ana/Mia Sites - Treatment

Proana sites, Ana-Mia dangers, cultural pressure, and recovery. Experts begin to concur that anorexia is a disease.
