Course Description
This course is designed to give the student a comprehensive overview of intimate partner violence as it relates to working with victims and survivors. No prior knowledge of the topic is needed in order to take this course. The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women (DAHMW), a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, has been offering support, information, referrals and direct services to victims of intimate partner violence for over seven years now through our toll free nationally available helpline. We look at intimate partner violence from a perspective that is gender inclusive by teaching students how to understand the complexities and dynamics of intimate partner violence whether the victim is a female or a male in a heterosexual or same-sex relationship.

While course enrollment is continual (students can enroll and begin at any time), this is NOT a self-paced course. This course takes approximately 30 hours to complete and students have up to six weeks to finish. Course consists of reading, brief written assignments, quizzes and a final exam (sent to you by the instructor once you have completed the reading, assignments and quizzes). Students will be expected to follow a lesson plan and turn in all assignments and quizzes and the final exam. All students will have the opportunity to seek instructor assistance, when needed, and can expect to receive feedback on all assignments, quizzes and discussion board forums.
Special Note for DAHMW Volunteers: In addition to online training helpline advocates with DAHMW will need to also attend mock call training sessions via teleconference after they have finished the online training.
DAHMW trainer Jan Brown's course Domestic Violence: A Time For Change is geared toward those interested in becoming a volunteer advocate for the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women. It is also appropriate for individuals who wish to learn more about domestic abuse in an effort to support their loved ones or even help themselves.
This training will enable the student to have a well rounded understanding of the many facets of domestic violence and how to offer support and resources to male and female victims of intimate partner violence whether they are in heterosexual or same sex relationships. After finishing this course the student can be certified to be a volunteer and/or advocate for the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women.
