Historical Research is for people who like to "dig" into history. This course explains how to research history and is geared toward: history buffs, writers and genealogists. It covers such subjects as : first and secondary sources, cemeteries, interviewing, the way to read a history book, maps and setting up a subject and filing system.

 

 It is very "hands-on" because it encourages you to:

 

 -pick up a history book and look at it in a different way

 - visit a museum with new eyes

 - visit a cemetery and come out with oodles of information

 - be able to distinguish between first and secondary sources

 - appreciate the different types of maps

 - be able to judge the validity of a book, article, website etc in relation to your period of interest

 - "interview" a person who has information on your period of interest

 - store all this information

This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation.   1. Choosing Your Subject and Setting Up a Filing System - In this lesson you will choose a subject of interest and will keep it right to the last lesson. Our aim is to create a 3-dimentional form to your era. And the journey begins!
  2. Primary and Secondary Sources - It doesn't matter if you are researching for genealogy, for a report or for a novel, there are only two types of sources available.
  3. Reading a History Book - Are you going to read a history book in the same way you read a novel?
  4. How Valid is my Source? - There's a lot of information out there....but is it all valid?
  5. Interviewing - Don't be afraid.
  6. Maps - A picture is worth a thousand words....and a map is no exception.
  7. Cemeteries (1) - Putting together your cemetery kit
  8. Cemeteries (2) - Taking pictures and rubbings
