Basic Course: $120.00

Statistics Review 1 lays the groundwork for further study by introducing descriptive statistics and then probability as a precursor to inferential statistics. We will begin by covering some definitions, the basics of data, and how it can be organized, either in tabular form or graphically. We will then discuss variables and the concepts of descriptive measurement and then finish off with a thorough review of basic probability and probability distributions. Probability is the foundation for understanding statistical inference, which is the main topic area of the next course, Statistics Review 2. Enrolling in this course is a very cost-effective alternative to private tutoring, and will enable you to receive instruction in a totally self-paced, low-pressure environment. This course runs continuously - you may enroll at any time. After completing this course, you will hopefully gain a greater appreciation for the material. Due to the self-paced nature of the course, you should be able to focus on learning and understanding it, rather than feeling pressured to finish within a short time span or to just receive a passing grade. Enroll today! This is a self-paced, online course. You have 6 months to finish. An instructor will monitor your progress and assess your body of work at course completion. UniversalClass™ offers many wonderful learning tools to help you get the most out of your online course, including an online portfolio service that manages all your course completions. This class has been officially reviewed by our Course Review Committee that scrutinizes course content and instructor participation. This course has received our Committee's highest rating: 4 stars.

Course Description

This course, the first in a series of three, is intended as a review of basic concepts in probability and statistics.  It is geared toward the student who has already taken an academic course in statistics and needs a refresher before going back to school, or for anyone who would like an introduction to the subject before taking a formal academic course.  The only prerequisites for this course are a decent level of comfort with basic algebraic manipulation and coordinate geometry. You will need to purchase two very inexpensive textbooks to enroll in this class, and they are widely available on the Internet.  These books will also be used for Statistics Review 2 and Statistics Review 3, and I'm confident that you will enjoy them and keep them as handy references for a very long time.  In addition, it will be very helpful if you have a scientific calculator.
Instructor John Mordigal brings over 15 years experience in statistical analysis. Students taking this course will gain confidence in their ability to: -comprehend basic statistical concepts and successfully complete a formal academic course in probability and statistics. Enrolling in this course is a very cost-effective alternative to private tutoring, and will enable you to receive instruction in a totally self-paced, low-pressure environment. This course runs continuously - you may enroll at any time. After completing this course, you will hopefully gain a greater appreciation for the material. This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. We also offer an expedited Transcript Service for sending your accomplishments to a third party.

Course Lessons

  1. Introduction / Data and Variables - An introduction to statistics and a discussion of important preliminary concepts and definitions, such as descriptive and inferential statistics, variables, and levels of measurement.
  2. Organizing and Displaying Data - A discussion of how data can be organized and displayed with frequency distributions, histograms, and frequency plots. This is a precursor to some concepts of probability.
  3. Descriptive Measures - This lesson covers various measures of central tendency, dispersion or variation, location, distribution shape, and associated concepts.
  4. Probability - Part 1 - An introduction to the basic definitions, principles, and tools of probability. Includes discussion of sample spaces, events, intersections, unions, and complements.
  5. Probability - Part 2 - An introduction to the concepts of conditional probability, the notion of independence, contingency tables, and a basic discussion of Bayes' Theorem.
  6. Probability - Part 3 - This lesson covers counting principles for use with large sample spaces and the the concepts of combinations and permutations.
  7. Random Variables / Probability Distributions - This lesson includes an introduction to the concept of random variables and probability distributions and how to determine the expected value and variance.
  8. Discrete Distributions - Binomial - In this lesson we go into detail regarding the Binomial Distribution, a very common "discrete" distribution that models experiments and situations with two possible outcomes.
  9. Discrete Distributions - Poisson - In this lesson we go into detail regarding the Poisson Distribution, another very common "discrete" distribution that models the number of occurrences in a given time interval or space.
  10. Continuous Distributions - The Normal Distribution - Finally, we cover perhaps the most famous distribution of all, the Normal Distribution. We will also cover how to compute probabilities for continuous distributions.
