Rich Kurtzman has been teaching Spanish for approximately 5 years at the university level. He received his Master's degree in Spanish Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he trained future Spanish teachers and conducted personal research on the acquisition of Spanish Language. He has been living and working in Barcelona for the past five years where he used to run a Spanish Language program for 250 students and where he continues to teach today.
Rachel Dziallo has her Master's degree in Spanish Language and Literature from MiddleburyCollege. She spent two years living and studying in Madrid, Spain, as well as extensive professional travel to Spanish-speaking countries when working with a non-profit international education organization. Currently she is a freelance writer for Spanish language textbooks and works with the Latino community in Chicago, Illinois.

Course Description
This Instructional Guide on How to Speak Spanish (includes audio) is a fast, fun, and manageable way to learn Spanish in your own time. This online course starts at the beginning assuming you know nothing about Spanish (but I promise you already do) and walks you through, simple lesson by simple lesson, until you come out speaking about your daily routines, what you did yesterday, last year or in 1999, and what you are going to do tomorrow or in the year 2020. Along the way, you will find explanations, examples and activities that give you the building blocks to construct a base for the Spanish language that will help you speak one of the world’s most important languages.
Course Lessons
Lesson 1: Introduction
¿Hola y bienvenido! We will begin with some expert tips on how to learn a foreign language. We will also go over the formatting of this course.
Lesson 2: Unit 2- The Alphabet and Pronunciation Guide
In this unit we will cover the alphabet, the vowels, pronunciation rules, stress and accents, diphthongs, and tongue-twisters.
Lesson 3: Unit 3- Start Building Your Vocabulary
In this unit we will learn words of greetings and introductions, leave-taking, days of the week, months of the year, counting 1 -- 199, and telling time.
Lesson 4: Unit 4- Introduction to the Present Tense
In this unit we will learn verbs in the present tense, personal pronouns, verb conjugations, and negating verbs.
Lesson 5: Unit 5- Irregular and Otherwise Tricky Verbs in the Present Tense
In this unit we will go over stem changing verbs, To be or to be? Ser vs. Estar, Haber -- another verb meaning to be, and reflexive Verbs.
Lesson 6: Unit 6 - Improving Your Vocabulary
In this unit we will cover words for parts of the body, family & extended family, at home, common phrases, in a restaurant, counting 200 -- 1999, dialogue in a restaurant, and forming plurals.
Lesson 7: Unit 7- Describing People, Places and Things
In this unit we will cover nouns and adjectives, list of adjectives to describe people, list of adjectives to describe places and things, colors, placement of adjectives, and possessive adjectives.
Lesson 8: Unit 8- Talking About Your Tastes and Interests and Expressing Opinions
In this unit we will go over the verb gustar (to like) and other similar verbs, such as Parecer, a verbs that works like gustar.
Lesson 9: Unit 9- Prepositions
In this unit we will focus on prepositions por vs. para, preposition used to describe location, and common prepositions in use.
Lesson 10: Unit 10- Introduction to the Past Tense
In this unit we will cover the preterite tense: regular verbs, vocabulary the triggers the preterite tense, irregular verbs in the preterite, the imperfect tense, and irregular forms of the imperfect.
Lesson 11: Unit 11- Asking Questions
In this unit we will learn Yes/no questions and question words.
Lesson 12: Unit 12- Pronouns
In this unit we will learn about direct objects, indirect objects, and reflexive pronouns.
Lesson 13: Unit 13- Introduction to the Future Tense
In this unit we will go over word endings to refer to the near future, future tense, and vocabulary that triggers future tense.
Lesson 14: Bonus Unit: Cognates and False Friends
In this final unit we will go over the concepts of Cognates, and False Friends.
