Course Description

This course is a collection of lessons on various Famous Americans. Each lesson is on a Famous American and includes a lesson written at elementary level, a set of netlinks ranging from primary to high school level, a quiz, and two assignments. Students complete the course by studying any five of the Famous Americans available, creating a picture portraying the life of the person studied, write a report on the person, and pass an online quiz on details of the person's life and contribution to history.

The course meets objectives in History or Social Studies curriculums including Virginia SOLs. The lessons contain a range of materials so that they are suitable for a wide range of primary, elementary and older students. This course meets objectives for private and public schools. The course is suitable for home school and home bound students, and students with unique needs or abilities. Students under age 13 MUST be supervised by a parent or adult. Parent or adult MUST login and supervise the child's activities.

Course Requirements

Student should be able to read or have materials read to him or her. Students should be able to type or dictate his or her reports. Supervising parent or adult should be able to assist student by reading and typing for him or her and by guiding them in assignments. Supervising parent or adult should be able to guide student in uploading assignments to the course site.

Course Goals

Student will learn the story of five Famous Americans. Students can learn basic information and use netlinks to delve deeper. Students will complete one or two assignments (depending on age) to depict the person's life in a drawing and to write a report on the person.

Students will also meet technology goals in completing this course. The student will use a computer to access the information, complete a graphic and complete a report, plus use a computer to send these assignments to the instructor.

Reading Materials

The course consists of your choice of five lessons to be read online, and links with a variety of media for you to learn from. You do not need to buy a book. If you have or can borrow any books on the persons you are studying, it will help broaden your knowledge and history skills!

Grading Policy

Students earn grades by completing the quiz and one or both assignments for each of five Famous Americans. Students who do not earn a passing grade on any lesson must replace the lesson by studying a different Famous American. The age of the student will be a significant factor is assigning grades for the assignments. 70% average on the quizzes and assignments is passing. 95% average on the quizzes and assignments are at A+ or "Scholarship" level. Students who pass any five lessons will earn an Award for Achievement. Students who earn an average of 95% or higher across five passing lessons, will earn an Award for Outstanding Achievement. Students who average 80% and above across five passing lessons can receive a Letter of Recommendation, which may be useful in receiving formal credit for the learning.
