Course Description

Have fun getting ready for Easter 2007!  You've seen these beautiful eggs before and  probably just called them fancy Easter eggs. You'll learn the history, craft and legends of the gorgeous wax-resist process eggs (a very easy process) and about Ukraine, the area from which they originate.  Ukraine is one of the fourteen ex-Soviet republics.

The craft is basically very simple.  NO PREVIOUS ART EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.  Practice is the main ingredient.  According to legend, the more eggs made in a year, the better luck you will have.  Isn't that reason enough to get crafting on some eggs?  I've written this course so if you want to follow along using only crayons, markers or colored pencils and using the print out paper eggs, you may.

The basic supplies for this craft will cost approximately $10 to $15 (depending on which kit you purchase).  You will learn meanings of  colors and symbols appearing on the egg as well as new words to accompany your new skills.  Finished eggs make beautiful gifts and sell in gift shops anywhere from $10 to $150, depending on the skill of the artist.  Welcome to How To Make Beautiful Ukrainian Eggs!

Course Requirements

You should have a sense of adventure concerning learning new skills. No previous art experience is needed. Beautiful eggs will come with practice. Expect to have your own style if you can't or don't want to stick with the traditional designs. The point is to have fun and learn an age old art form.

A few reminders ~

Please remember to use the assignment submission form rather than emailing your assignments to my personal email address.  This keeps your work within the Universalclass system for grading.  Anything emailed to my personal email runs the chance of being lost in bulk email.

ALWAYS keep a copy of your work.

With the 5 classes I facilitate, I must grade in the order the assignments and quizzes come in.  Sometimes it make take a few days before your submission is graded.  Please be patient.

Also, I grade papers Monday through Friday and am off weekends.  Make sure to get your work in early in the week so you aren't waiting over the weekend, if possible.

These items will help you get through the class smoothly.

Course Goals

Course goals are to learn the history, legends and craft of making Ukrainian eggs. Students will read through the lessons and assignments several times. They will decorate eggs following the instructions if they have the materials needed. If they don't, they can print out paper egg shapes and use crayons, markers or paints to follow along.

Course Materials

You will need a course notebook, pen, pencil, pencil sharpener and eraser. If you are not going to use the Ukrainian egg kit, you may use crayons, markers, pastels, or paints to work using paper egg shapes. These shapes will be provided in the lessons to print out.
A list of supplies will be given at the end of lesson one as well as a supplier company. A basic Ukrainian eggs starter kit will cost approximately $12.00 - so figure on spending under $20 with shipping and handling. You can go through the entire course to learn the knowledge and buy your kit at a later date. And of course you'll need eggs! Start saving glass jars with wide mouths and a stack of newspapers. You'll  be using the jars for dyes and the newspapers to keep the table and floors nice.

Grading Policy

Students should read every lesson, do the assignments, read the netlinks, post in the forums and practice. Nothing takes the place of practice. During this time you will also have a lot of fun so don't look so serious!
