Course Description

This self study medical coding course will discuss the Integumentary System  with focus on the ICD-9-CM and CPT coding manuals.  Medical Terminology relating to the Integumentary System is also discussed to educate the student on this subject.  The class will bring knowlege to students that want to pursue their knowledge when working for a Dermatologist or a Family Practioner.

The focus of this course for the experienced coder is to gain additional knowledge in specialty coding involving the skin.  More than 150 coding scenarios for coding skin diseases and disorders and related procedures (CPT 10000 series) are provided to help the student continue his/her knowledge in the field of medical coding.

For the less advanced student, it is a course that would help gain knowledge of coding guidelines as implemented in the coding industry and to build confidence and speed when assigning codes.

The student will be able to look up codes and learn the process of using coding books when coding diseases involving the Integumentary System.
Identify both primary and principal diagnoses.
At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to correctly sequence codes and have thorough understanding and knowledge when coding disorders of the Skin, Subcutaneous and Accessory Structures.

Course Materials

ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 Coding Manuals. The student may use the manuals for the years 2004, 2005, or 2006.

If unable to obtain an ICD-9-CM coding manual, the student may use a free on-line ICD-9-CM Coding Manual available at www.flashcode.com. Log on and register at: www.flashcode.com. The student may obtain used coding books from a used bookstore or on-line bookstores.

A power point presentation is also available for students who have access to Power Point. If the student does not have Power Point, it is suggested that the student e-mail the instructor and the file will be sent in Microsoft Word format.

Grading Policy

At the end of this course, the student must complete the coding answer quiz which consists of 100 coding assignments for ICD-9-CM and 25 CPT coding scenarios, some which require a modifier and/or an ICD-9-CM code.
