Festival planning is not as easy as it seems. Festivals have become very popular in many communities. If you are interested in starting a festival in your area, or if you help plan a festival in your area, you can benefit from the advice and suggestions offered in this class. When you finish with this class, you will be able to plan and implement a successful festival in your community. This class covers how to organize, what committees you will need, how to convince people to volunteer to help you, etc. Also discussed in depth is finances - how to raise funds to put your event on, and how to attract corporate sponsors.
How to Plan and Implement a Community Festival is for participants interested in planning a community festival or major event open to the general public. This is a working course. The assignments will lead you into investigating requirements, costs, and fundraising. The chief requirements aside from internet access is a telephone, telephone directory, and a desire to plan a successful festival in your community.

This course covers: 1. Deciding what kind of festival you want to hold. 2. Understanding how to best organize. 3. Investigating the requirements for holding a festival. 4. Deciding program components of your festival. 5. Determining the approximate cost of your festival. 6. Preparing a workable budget for your festival. 7. Hopefully, watching your efforts come to fruition as you hold your festival.

Course Lessons

  1. Getting Organized - Part One - This lesson will focus on the basic requirements and lists steps you need to take to organize a community festival. From bank account to IRS to board of directors - it's all here. This lesson will help you decide if you really want to do this festival!
  2. Getting Organized Part Two - Festival Committees - This chapter explains the difference between administrative committees and program committees. Examples of the both types of committees are described and their duties are outlined.
  3. You Cannot Have a Festival Without These - Three things are key to ANY festival. This lesson explains what these three main things are and how to achieve them at nominal cost.
  4. Concessions - The Financial Backbone of Your Festival - Festival vendors are a very important part of your festival. In this lesson you will learn how to register them, how to accommodate them, and most important of all, how to keep them happy so they will continue to come back for more.
  5. Finances and Budget - An enormous amount of effort should be concentrated on finances and budget. The main reasons most organizations fail are financial. This lesson covers the basics of both.
  6. Tying It All Together - This final lesson goes in depth about Publicity, the actual festival, and follow up after the festival is over. A PR timetable, sample evaluation form, and why you need an on-site office are highlights of this lesson.
