This six part course will guide students through the process of creating a thriving food ecosystem in their backyard. Among other things, they will learn about companion planting, seed saving and how to maintain healthy soil. When they complete the course they will know how to grow fresh, healthy food for themselves and their family. Why should you create an ecosystem in your backyard? In North America the average distance that food travels to get from where it is grown to where you eat it is 1300 miles. This means that, at best, when you bite into that apple or potato, brussels sprout or corn it is already many days old. Is it still fresh?, hardly. It also means that people are reliant on a national transportation system in order for them to put supper on the table. Think of the difference in freshness and independence that can be achieve when participants are able to step out their back door and pick dinner. Enroll today! This is a self-paced, online course. You have 6 months to finish. An instructor will monitor your progress and assess your body of work at course completion. UniversalClass™ offers many wonderful learning tools to help you get the most out of your online course, including an online portfolio service that manages all your course completions.

Why should I create an ecosystem in my backyard? In North America the average distance that food travels to get from where it is grown to where you eat it is 1300 miles. This means that , at best, when you bite into that apple or potato , brussel sprout or corn it is already many days old. Is it still fresh?, hardly. It also means that you and your family are reliant on a national transportation system in order for you to put supper on the table. Think of the difference in freshness and independence you achieve when you can step out your back door and pick dinner.

Backyard Permaculture is a six part course guiding students through the process of creating a thriving food ecosystem in their backyard. They will learn about companion planting, seed saving and how to maintain healthy soil. At the end of the course students will know how to grow fresh, healthy food for themselves and their family.

The only requirement is a desire to grow healthy food and reduce our impact on the earth and an interest in increasing our self-reliance. After completing the course students will be able to design a backyard permaculture system that meets their needs, both now and in the future, and the needs of all the Lifeforms that a healthy ecosystem depends upon. Backyard Permaculture can be completed in 18 hours, although students are encouraged to proceed at their own pace.

Course Lessons

  1. What is Permaculture? - Permaculture is an ethically bassed design system for creating sustainable human environments.
  2. Take Responsibility - Permaculture has an ethical foundation. 1- Care for the Earth
    2- Care for People
    3- Share the surplus.
  3. Companion Planting - Some plants do better when in the company of other plants. Companion planting is using this knowledge to increase plant performance. Companion planting includes planting flowers, herbs or vegetables to repel or trap harmful insects.
  4. Soil and Water - It all begins with the soil. All life comes from the soil. All that we eat and all that it eats comes from the soil.
  5. Edge - The zone between two ecosystems, (forest and meadow, for example) is more productive than either of the the other systems. Permaculture design uses the edge effect to increase yield and decrease labour.
  6. Sheet Mulching - Mulch reduces your work as it retains water and suppresses weeds.
