Course Description

Parenting the Normal Teen is a faith-based parenting class designed to empower and support parents and children as they navigate the storms of adolescence.  Religious affiliation is not a prerequisite for either taking or benefiting from the class.  The class is, however, permeated with Christian principles which are embraced across denominational lines.  Parents of preteens wishing to prepare themselves during the "calm-before-the-storm," as well as parents who are in the midst of the normal storms of adolescence will want to take this class.  Those who are experiencing severe storms will want to take my class Solution Focused Parenting with Difficult Teens (SFP 101).  Parenting the Normal Teen is a ten-lesson course, covering such things as communicating with your teen, relationship building, problem-solving, discipline, and faith development.

Lesson 1: Storms Never Last

The age of adolescence has been described as the period of stress and storm. For "normal" teens the storms never last; bad times all come to an end.

Lesson 2: What Is A Christian Family?

Just as five individuals standing in a gym shooting a basketball do not make a basketball team, a family is not a Christian family simply because all of the members are individual Christians.

Lesson 3: Why Christian Families Have Problems

That Christian families have problems needs no proof, for we have all witnessed Christian families being stretched to the limit by death, disease, economic hardships and other socially acceptable problems. We struggle with the "why?"

Lesson 4: A Short Course In Human Relations

Parents sometimes forget that their adolescents are first of all human beings made in the image of God and should be treated with the same respect and dignity as any other person.

Lesson 5: It All Begins With Listening

Listening is hard work, but it pays great dividends, because many parent-child conflicts result from a failure to either send or receive a message accurately. In this lesson you will learn how to listen with the whole self, and not just the ears.

Lesson 6: There Is A Time To Speak

Sometimes parents may feel that they need to learn the slang of teens in order to communicate without an interpreter. There is a universal language that will help.

Lesson 7: Avoding Parent Traps

Teens often know their parents better than their parents know them. The teen knows how to set a trap and get the parent to step into it. In this lesson you will learn to identify and avoid the traps and the bait your teen uses to ensnare you.

Lesson 8: Defining the Problem

A problem properly defined is half solved. Parents often spend time trying to solve situations, which are not problems, but things that must be accepted. In this lesson you will learn how to define a problem in BOSS terms.

Lesson 9: Strangling Isn't A Solution

Many parents have light-heartedly said when frustrated with a child's behavior, "I could just strangle him/her." Strangling is not a solution. This lesson will equip you o find solutions.

Lesson 10: A Second-Hand Religion Vs A Hand-Me-Down Faith

A second-hand religion may consist of truth and truth-based traditions, just as does a faith that is passed from generation to generation. But a second-hand religion is of little value. In this lesson you will learn the difference and how to pass faith to
