Course Description

This course will deliver knowledge on the current developments in inclusion, and will provide guidance and instruction in areas such as: teacher attitudes, preparation and effective instructional practices. In addition, it is designed to provide teachers with skills they need to make inclusion of students with autism successful.

The course covers:
(a) central features of effective inclusion education programs;
(b) research involving teachers' and administrators' attitudes towards students with autism;
(c) collaborative partnerships between general and special education teachers;
(d) knowledge about effective teacher communication;
(e) strategies for parental preparation for school, transition and other segments of life;
(f) types of planning and factors involved in planning;
(g) effective instructional inclusive strategies such as functional instruction, meaningful reinforcement, and peer support;
(h) performance- based and portfolio assessment and how it can be used;
and (i) IDEA 97 and its impact of the disciplinary policies of students with disabilities.

This course offers 1.4 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. Course Lessons

  1. Unit 1: Introduction to the Course - Please complete the following: read case study, complete case study survey, participant questionnaire survey, and teacher efficacy survey.
  2. Unit 1.2: Monthly Progress Assignment - For Tobago Teachers Only!! Begin your progress reports now.
  3. Unit 2: Inclusion - This unit describes the supports students with ASD can use to help them adjust optimally to settings that involve frequent contact with nondisabled peers.
  4. Unit 2.1: Current Developments - Reviews the reauthorized IDEA, with special attention to its LRE mandates; review of the central features of effective inclusive education programs.
  5. Unit 2.2: Attitudes - Discusses the research involving general education teachers' and administrators' attitudes towards students with autism and the type and quality of teacher-student and administrator-teacher interactions.
  6. Unit 2.3: Teacher Preparation - Explores the collaborative partnership between special and general education teachers and stresses its importance to successful inclusive practices. It also explains that adequate teacher preparation is essential to inclusion.
  7. Unit 2.4: Communication - Provides knowledge that open discussions between the inclusion teachers are essential; and that inclusion teachers will be expected to modify the ways they do things; and to understand that change becomes the constant in these classes.
  8. Unit 2.5: Preparation of Parents - Shows strategies for parental participation in preparing children with autism for school, transition, and other segments of life.
  9. Unit 3: Implementation - This unit will explain the 7 factors necessary for successful inclusion and show how to implement an effective inclusive training program for general education teachers in working with students with autism in an inclusive environment.
  10. Unit 3.1: Planning - Shows the types of planning and the factors involved in the planning. Gives planning tips for teachers working with students with autism. Gives tips on how to select appropriate instructional adaptations.
  11. Unit 3.2: Effective Instructional Practices - Shows effective instructional strategies for students with autism such as: functional instruction, meaningful reinforcements, and peer support and explains why they are used.
  12. Unit 3.3: Evaluating Learning - Explains how performance-based and portfolio assessments can be used with students with disabilities in the inclusion classroom.
  13. Unit 3.4: Disciplinary Policies - Descibes IDEA 97 and the impact it has on the disciplinary policies of students with disabilities.
  14. Unit 4: Conclusion of the Course - This is the final assignment, please read the case study, complete the case study survey, course evaluation and teacher efficacy survey.
