Course Description
This course is for anyone involved in and interested in the learning process at any level from pre-K to graduate school, e.g. as a student, parent, teacher, care-giver, tutor. A deeper understanding of how a person actually learns will help in designing curricula or courses of study, and in creating environments that make learning easier. The course will have 5 lessons:
1. Introduction to the theories of learning- definitions of learning and examination of the learning conditions that help in accomplishing learning objectives.
2. Behavioural theories of learning- examination of the key concepts of the behaviourist approach to learning, classical and operant conditioning and social learning theories.
3. Cognitive theories of learning- how cognitive theories differ from behavioural theories.
4. The brain, emotions and learning- the relatively newer ideas of how the brain functions in learning and how these can be applied to the classroom and other learning situations.
5. Learning styles/Multiple Intelligences- overview of Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences and some applications to learning situations.
Course Requirements
This course only requires a genuine interest in improving learning for oneself or for another student, and a commitment to study the lessons carefully, read widely with the help of the provided links,complete the assignments and tests, and participate by sharing assignments and ideas on the message board.

*to apply the information to improve conditions of learning for oneself or for another student.
Reading Materials
There is no required text, but suggested books will be listed.
Links to useful information on the internet will be provided with each lesson.
Grading Policy
There will be an assignment for each lesson. These assignments will not be graded. The main purpose is for the student's own evaluation of the understanding of the course material. But the overall quality of the assignments will be taken into consideration in awarding certificates.
There will be 2 quizzes which will be graded.
Certificates will be awarded on the basis of performance both in the assignments and the quizzes.
