At the conclusion of this course, Introduction to Counseling, the student will have a better understand of what is involved in being a counselor, information on the basic theories of counseling and be better able to decide if a career in counseling is suitable and desirable.

This is a self-paced course that students are taking for their own interest and enhancement.There are no required texts for the course, however the instructor will recommend a couple of books. There will be assignments for each lesson and 2 additional tests/quizzes. The quizzes will be graded on 100 point scale. The assignments will be used to supplement and upgrade a student's score where necessary. As long as participants complete each lesson and exercise they should pass the course. They will be given the opportunity to re-take tests if the score is low.

Course Description

This course explains what counseling is and what a career in counseling requires. If you are thinking about a career in counseling this course is for you. Trying to distinguish between a psychologist, a psychiatrist and a family therapist can be confusing. Here is where you will understand what counseling is and what a career in counseling requires. 

This course will help you to understand the training involved in being a counselor. You will get an opportunity to examine some of your own characteristics and how they fit into the role of a counselor. It explains some of the different approaches to  counseling such as behavioral, psychodynamic and humanistic. In addition it describes different environments in which counseling is applied.

Lesson 1: What is Counseling?

This lesson presents definitions of counseling and explains the different categories of counselors and situations in which counseling is used.

Lesson 2: Skills and Training

This lesson describes some of the skills required of good counselors, and describes the basic training needed.

Lesson 3: Approaches to Counseling

This lesson and the next will examine the different approaches to counseling, including Cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and humanistic.

Lesson 4: Approaches to Counseling- 2

A continuation of the types of counseling and thoughts on choosing an approach.

Lesson 5: Roles and Functions of a Counselor

This lesson describes the different types of counselors and the many functions they can perform in different counseling environments.
