Would you like to clarify your own values? Would you like to strengthen your Christian beliefs? Then, would you like to improve your reading skills? Furthermore, would you like to know the appropriate basis for agreeing or disagreeing with an author? This is a course that will help Christian students who have to read secular materials to do so with increased discernment. A Christian student who attends a secular college is sometimes 'blown away' by the ideas that bombard him. He or she may also pick up many things that are inconsistent with his or her basic faith--without realizing what is happening. This course will mention basic principles to which the student will want to hold in a steadfast manner. It will also help the student to be aware of the basic principles of humanistic thought. Watching for these signs will help the student to think critically, and to make up his own mind without being blindly thrown about 'with every wind of doctrine.' This course will also be helpful to Christian homeschool parents as they often use a wide range of material in designing their courses of study. Parents of Christian students who attend public/government schools will also find help with teaching their children to be discerning students. Enroll today! This is a self-paced, online course. You have 6 months to finish. An instructor will monitor your progress and assess your body of work at course completion. UniversalClass™ offers many wonderful learning tools to help you get the most out of your online course, including an online portfolio service that manages all your course completions. This class has been officially reviewed by our Course Review Committee that scrutinizes course content and instructor participation. This course has received our Committee's highest rating: 4 stars.

This is a course that will help Christian students who have to read secular materials to do so with increased discernment. The course uses the S.I.F.T. strategy developed by Dr. Carney for evaluating any communication with which a student may come in contact.

Course Lessons

  1. How to Tap into The One Source You Can Always Trust - This lesson presents the basic foundation upon which this course is built. Since the course is about "sifting" ideas, the need for such sifting must be presented.
  2. Grasp These Twelve Principles and You Can't Go Wrong - This lesson presents some of the basic beliefs of Christians. When a Christian comes across an idea that is contrary to one of these basic beliefs, he or she has already agreed to disagree with the conflicting idea that is being presented.
  3. Avoiding the One Trap Into Which You Never Want to Fall - The next few lessons discuss the effect of Secular Humanism upon society. Many Humanistic ideas need to be sifted by the Christian. Lesson three deals with the effect of such Humanism upon psychology.
  4. How to Avoid the Two Largest Causes of Physical Problems - Thoughts can affect us physically; therefore, a philosophy can affect a behavior. From there, it is easy to see how a behavior can affect us physically. In this lesson, we shall examine three observations that show how Humanism affects us physically.
  5. Sifting Through the "New" Morality - This lesson discusses the contribution of situation ethics to moral decline, the interrelatedness of Humanism and situation ethics, followed by the contrast of Christian ethics.
  6. Five Things to Watch to Keep From "Getting Robbed" - We can see the effect of Humanistic thinking in at least five areas of our national economy.
  7. How to be a Real Success - Many popular views of success are in contrast to the Christian view of success.
  8. The Twenty-Five Plus Hours per Week through which Your Child May Not Be Prepared to Sift - This lesson shows how Secular Humanism has had a widespread effect upon education.
  9. When Should You Change Your Mind? - Levels of Biblical Authority: Direct, Indirect, or Analagous, are discussed.
  10. When May You Disagree with an Author? - Techniques for pulling out the main content of communications, as well as proper reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with an author, are discussed. The conclusion of the course is placed at the end of the lesson also.
