Course Description

This course is designed to give students a more advanced look at hoof care. The emphasis of this particular course is the identification and treatment of various lamenesses in horses. Students enrolled in this course will be given the opportunity to learn how anatomy and development contribute to the making of sound horses. Structural abnormalities and gait patterns will be dissected. Lameness conditions in the hoof, lower leg and joints will be discussed in detail. The treatment options and farrier considerations, including an explanation of specialty shoes, for each lameness will be taught.

Lesson 1: Leg lameness

This lesson covers the various lameness conditions that reside in the lower legs.

Lesson 2: Joint Lameness

This lesson will explore and discuss the various joint conditions that cause lameness.

Lesson 3: Types of Specialty Shoes

This lesson exposes students to the various types of specialty shoes on the market. Students will learn how to identify and apply them as well as what conditions they help to correct.

Lesson 4: Hoof Related Lameness

This lesson will review and discuss several lameness conditions that originate in the hoof. The diagnosis, treatment and shoeing considerations for each condition will be discussed.

Lesson 5: Hoof and Lower Leg Development

In this lesson students will understand how these structures develop both before and after birth.

Lesson 6: Structural Abnormalities

In this lessons students will learn how to recognize structural abnormalities as well as their associated gait patterns and shoeing considerations.

Lesson 7: Creating Balanced Hooves

This lesson will walk students through how to asses hooves for proper balance.

Lesson 8: Treatment and Diagnostic Procedures

This lesson will cover both the treatment and diagnostic procedures available when dealing with lameness.

Lesson 9: Navicular and Founder

This lesson explores two common types of lameness, Navicular and Founder.

Lesson 10: Hoof and Lower Leg Anatomy

This lesson offers and indepth look at the anatomy of the hoof and lower leg.

Lesson 11: Conducting a Lameness Exam

This lesson will walk you through the step-by-step process of conducting a lameness exam on a horse to help diagnose the offending condition.
