Course Description
This self-paced online course provides an in-depth look at horse coat color genetics. Students will learn how to identify coat colors, patterns and markings. The science behind each color will reveal how each color/pattern is transmitted from parents to offspring. Students enrolled in this class with have the unique opportunity to learn how to predict the color of potential foals.
Course Lessons
Lesson 1: Introduction to Genetics
This lesson will provide an in-depth background understanding of genetics. It also includes a comprehensive study on terminology.
Lesson 2: Base Coat Colors
In this lesson you will learn the three base coat colors and the genetics that affect them. You will also learn to predict the base coat colors of offspring from known parents starting with the chestnut coat color.
Lesson 3: Black Base Coat Color
This lesson covers the distinctions on various forms of black coat colors and the genetics behind them.
Lesson 4: Bay and Brown Base Coat Colors
This lesson explains the Bay and Brown base coat colors.
Lesson 5: Dilution Factors
This lesson will explore the genetics behind such coat colors as cremello, perlino, palomino, buckskin, dun and taffy.
Lesson 6: Genetic Grays and Roans
This lesson describes the genetic principles that govern the many shades and variation of gray and roan horses.
Lesson 7: Paint/Pinto Coat Patterns
This lesson will explore the genetics behind paint and pinto coat patterns.
Lesson 8: Spotted Coat Patterns
Learning the many variations of spotted patterns will be covered in this lesson. This lesson will cover additive spotting patterns and sex-linked patterns. As well as how to make genetic predictions for coat patterns.
Lesson 9: White and Albino Coat Colors
This lesson will explore the many myths around white and albino horses. It will also explain how to properly identify the various white coat colors.
Lesson 10: Other Coat Colors and Patterns
This lesson covers the remaining and rare coat colors and patterns. Those discussed are brindle, champagne and others. This lesson also explores reasons why these colors/patterns are genetically rare.
Lesson 11: White Markings
This lesson reveals how white markings are inherited as well as how to identify them.
Lesson 12: Equine Coat Color Genetics Review
This lesson will help students to review the course material and make connections between the genetic concepts that they have learned. We will also explore color as it relates to environmental factors and market trends.
