The primary goal of this course Equine Business Management is to provide students with a framework of knowledge about equine business management through readings, discussions, and hands-on assignments. The contributing goals are: 1) Help students assess which business endeavor is right for them, 2) Have students create a clientele projection, 3) Provide students with knowledge on how to hire and maintain competent staff, 4) Have students create an effective advertising campaign, 5) Help students make insurance decisions, 6) Provide students with budgeting information and allow students to see if their business plan is profitable through budget predictions.
Instructor Angie Senter has held numerous jobs in the business of horses. Some of these include: 1994-1998 helped run a cattle ranch in western WA, 1998-Started trick training horses for commercial re-sale, 1999-Trick trained horses in Pullman, WA for local entertainment venues. Ran a horse brokering business, 2000-Bought and trick trained "Eeyore" miniature jack and opened a jack breeding service, 2000-current training trick horses for elderly care facilities and entertainment venues. Train horses for people with special needs.
Course Description
This class will provide students with a well-rounded look at equine business management. Students will be introduced to various forms of equine businesses. They will develop a business plan complete with forms, budgets, and clientele projections. This is an excellent class for those currently running their own business or those that are contemplating turning a hobby into a profitable business.

This lesson will walk you through how to create a business image. You will develop a farm name, colors, and logo.
Lesson 3: Types of Businesses-Boarding
Running a boarding business requires much thought as to location and management considerations. This lesson will walk you through those decisions.
Lesson 4: Types of Businesses-Leasing
Leasing horses can be a profitable business when managed correctly. Read the following lesson to gather information on what type of leasing program is best for you.
Lesson 5: Types of Businesses-Horse Training
Horse training involves the training of the horse itself. This lesson will help you to understand how this can be a lucrative business adventure.
Lesson 6: Types of Businesses-Lessons
Teaching riding lessons to various ages and disciplines requires unique skills from the educator. Many people find this to be the perfect business for them as they get to interact with both people and horses.
Lesson 7: Types of Businesses-Horse Breeding
Running a breeding business can involve selling the services of mares or studs. This lesson will outline the equipment needed as well as important contract information.

Lesson 11: Placement Advertisement
In this lesson you will learn about placement advertisement. This form of publicity includes business cards, flyers, signs, and brochures.
Lesson 12: Handling Employees
In this lesson you will learn how to hire and retain competent employees. You will learn employer-employee relationship skills as well as general hiring and benefits laws.
Lesson 13: Facilities and Equipment Maintenance
This lesson will help you to determine how best to maintain your facilities and equipment. Good maintenance will help reduce replacement and repair cost as well as keep your business running effectively.
Lesson 14: Insurance
Insurance is a major issue when owning and operating your own business. This lesson will walk you through the basic components and types of insurances.
Lesson 15: Budgeting and Profit Prediction
Now that you have a good foundation in equine business management this lesson will take you through budgeting. The profit prediction portion of this lesson will help determine if your business will make money before you begin.
