Class Syllabus: Equine Business Management

This course provides a comprehensive look at running an equine business. The beginning lessons cover types of businesses and help the student to make a well educated decision on what business is right for him/her. The following lessons help the student build their business by assessing clients, hiring employees, buying insurance, etc. Each lesson provides a building block to success. The various tests, quizzes and assignments help the student to prepare necessary business documents, advertisements, and projections. Upon completion of this course a student will have all of the necessary framework for owning and operating an equine business.
Course Requirements
All required course readings are provided within the confines of this course. A suggested text is Starting and Running Your Own Horse Business, by Mary Ashby McDonald. Due to the technical nature of this class a basic understanding of mathematical procedures such as adding, subtracting, and calculating percentages would be useful. A high school level reading and writing ability is necessary to be successful in this class.
Course Goals
The primary goal of this course is to provide students with a framework of knowledge about equine business management through readings, discussions, and hands-on assignments. The contributing goals are:
1) Help students assess which business endeavor is right for them
2)Have students create a clientele projection
3)Provide students with knowledge on how to hire and maintain competent staff
4) Have students create an effective advertising campaign
5) Help students make insurance decisions
6) Provide students with budgeting information and allow students to see if their business plan is profitable through budget predictions.
Course Materials
All reading materials for this class are provided. It is advised that students have access to a word processing program and graphics software.
Grading Policy
This class is graded on a series of tests and written assignments. Each lesson ends with a graded portion. All assignments must be completed to receive passing marks. No tests can be re-taken however, all assignments can be re-submitted after revisions to attempt a higher grade. Participation in all class discussions is mandatory.
