Course Description
Every person, no matter what the curriculum, needs to know their Dictionary and Thesaurus Skills. These must be learned in order to achieve the basics of reading and writing. The skills taught in this course include, Synonyms, Homonyms, Compound Words, Word Definitions, Alphabetical order, Spelling, Adjectives, Verbs, Nouns and many other parts of speech. Each lesson could take a day or a week depending on your thoroughness. The lessons in this course are loaded with Educational Activities and FUN Learning! We have started with 15 core lessons and are adding more as we progressed, to keep the learning fresh. Each Class Lesson provides a logical method of breaking down the parts of speech and other information needed to learn Dictionary, Thesaurus, and Language Skills. The corresponding assignments will achieve the 'hands-on' approach of instruction , where we have loaded the course with over five dozen printouts, puzzles, games, and other teaching activities! Along the way, you will find Class polls and forum discussion, to see how others are learning from the class. There are over 60 related Net Links to learn from, and over two dozen References and Resources for Dictionaries, Thesaurus, Encyclopedias, media, books, and more! To complement your class lessons, there are seven or more self quizzes, online quizzes and tests, to verify your newly learned skills. ****As a special bonus, included in the course, there is a Science class on Plants and Botany, various History facts of the world, including Ancient Egypt and more, a Writing unit where sentence parts are used, and many more spelling and language lessons!****
Course Requirements
You will work at your own pace, but need to accomplish your goals in a timely manner. Some teachers like to take a lesson a day, some you may do more quickly. Regardless, you will be given lessons to read with an assignment for each. There will be links to movies, printouts to complete, games and quizzes to take. These will all contain information necessary to learn the skills required. You must also have each answer spelled correctly, as that is a part of learning. By following each link, reading the lessons, and using the resources for this class, you will find all the information you need to know about using a Dictionary or Thesaurus.
Course Goals
Your goals for taking this course should be to learn how to efficiently a Dictionary or Thesaurus. You will first learn in layman terms, then increase learning to know the terminology, as you progress through Language Skills and how to use your reference books.
Reading Materials
All reading materials will be given in the lessons, Word Documents, links, games, movies, and quizzes. Any additions made to this course, will be in the class forums, or followed by a class email.
Grading Policy
Each lesson, assignment, quiz, game, post to the forum discussion, and the final test will have points assigned to it. These will be valued between five and ten points each, and accumulated throughout the course. The points will then be totaled to determine your final score.
