Course Overview
Books - we handle books everyday. They're such simple objects yet there is a sort of magic about being able to create one. Do you know anyone that has ever made a small decorative book? Probably not. Although many people are into this craft, it's hard to find someone that does it unless you are attached to a bookarts group. I will also show you in this class where to find those into the craft. This isn't a class about writing a book although if you want to write in your creation you can. You can be as artistic as you want.
Every part of a book has its own name. You'll learn the names of the parts, history of the book and know where to find out more about book events in your community. Bookmaking is a craft that deserves your attention.
You should welcome the craft of bookmaking into your life. It's a great way to let your mind float and just relax. Bookarts is a great stress reliever you'll find yourself returning to again and again. The end product is a creation all your own - a way of giving yourself the present of accomplishment.
You'll find yourself looking at paper in a new way. I'm always collecting some kind of cardboard, giftwrap or product wrapping and saving it 'for later' when I can match it to the right bookart project.
Course Requirements
You should have a spirit of adventure for learning new things. Everything you need will be included here in the course except your crafting supplies and materials which are listed in the syllabus.
A few reminders ~
Please remember to use the assignment submission form rather than emailing your assignments to my personal email address. This keeps your work within the Universalclass system for grading. Anything emailed to my personal email runs the chance of being lost in bulk email.
ALWAYS keep a copy of your work.
With the 5 classes I facilitate, I must grade in the order the assignments and quizzes come in. Sometimes it make take a few days before your submission is graded. Please be patient.
Also, I grade papers Monday through Friday and am off weekends. Make sure to get your work in early in the week so you aren't waiting over the weekend, if possible.
These items will help you get through the class smoothly.
Course Goals
1 - To learn the basics of bookarts;
2 - To add an artistic outlet in your life, even if you've no previous experience in art; and
3 - most of all, to have fun.
Course Materials
You'll need a good-sized table area; Elmer's Glue or a similar craft glue; scissors, colored papers; plain paper; stiff cardboard or mat board scraps.
Optional materials: any art supplies you may want to decorate your books.
Grading Policy
Students should work the assignments and read the lessons. Click on each netlink, take the polls and tests. It'll be fun so don't look so serious. :)
