ICD-10-PCS Section Values of the Ancillary Subsection

The third subsection of ICD-10-PCS is the Ancillary, which includes section values B through H. This provides codes for procedures classified as Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Physical Rehabilitation and Diagnostic Audiology, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Treatment.

Section Value B: Imaging

Codes in the Imaging section value describe procedures and diagnostic tests used to view parts of the body or generate images of body sections. All codes in this section value have a first character value of B, a second character value which represents one of 23 body systems, a third character which is the root type, a fourth character which is the body part, a fifth character which is contrast, and two qualifier characters 6 and 7 (Davis, 2011).

Section Value C: Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine section value C of the Ancillary subsection is organized like the Imaging section value. The main difference is that the fifth character of the Nuclear medicine section value defines the radionuclide instead of the contrast material. The third character classifies the root types, which include 1-Planar Nuclear Medicine Imaging, 2-Tomographic Nuclear Medicine Imaging, 3-Positron Emission Tomography, (PET), 4- Nonimaging Nuclear Medicine Uptake, and 5- Nonimaging Nuclear Medicine Probe (Davis, 2011).

Section Value D: Radiation Oncology

The Radiation Oncology section value D of the Ancillary subsection involves the procedures used to code cancer treatment with radiation therapy. The second character values specify the body system, such as central nervous system, lymphatic and hematologic system, and respiratory system. The root type for the third character specifies the general modality used for the procedure, including beam radiation therapy, brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. The fourth character identifies the treatment site, and the fifth character specifies modality. The sixth character indicates the isotope, and the seventh character indicates qualifiers (Grebner & Suarez, 2013).

Section Value F: Physical Rehabilitation and Diagnostic Audiology

The Physical Rehabilitation and Diagnostic Audiology section value F contains character definitions that are different from the other section values of ICD-10-PCS. The second character is a section qualifier that specifies whether the procedure is rehabilitation or diagnostic audiology. The third character identifies the general procedure root type. The fourth character defines the body system and body region. The fifth character further defines the procedure type, and the sixth one specifies what equipment is used (Davis, 2011).

Section Value G: Mental Health

The Mental Health section value C contains specific values in the third and fourth characters that describe the procedure. The other characters are only placeholders. There are 11 root type values used, including Psychological Tests, Crisis Intervention, Individual Psychotherapy, Counseling, Family Psychotherapy, Electroconvulsive Therapy, Biofeedback, Hypnosis, Narcosynthesis, Group Therapy, and Light Therapy (Davis, 2011).

Section Value H: Substance Abuse Treatment

The Substance Abuse Treatment section value G is structured much like the Mental Health section value. The third character defines the root type, the fourth one is a qualifier to further classify that root type, and the second, fifth, sixth, and seventh characters are placeholders with the value Z. The seven root type values include Detoxification Services, Individual Counseling, Group Counseling, Individual Psychotherapy, Family Counseling, Medication Management, and Pharmacotherapy (Davis, 2011).
